Guard should not be grouped into percussion We are sooo much better lol
LEMME HEAR IT
editt; OH HAI GUYS. I'M STICKING BY MY OPINION KTHX. You do what you want. Guard still isn't as epic as percussion OR band playing awesomness. Unless you come back during concert time to play the oboe or something else you can't march with then you're okay. Unless you're really annoying. & which I haven't met a non-annoying guard person yet

What Horn said.
And what's wrong with percussion? No section of the band is superior to another. neutral

Perussion's actually PART of the band. What does Guard do? They twirl flags. Percussionists keep the beat and tempo.

Although I to a point agree percussion is better than guard they still work hard and bashign them all because some one wanted to be organized is low.
You guys are just proving perucssionists are asses. And I don't like my section being called that.
Our guard goes out in the winter bear footed in a summer dress. We have full fledged uniforms.
Don't knock their work.

See how fast you "accidentally" get hit. you know that sometimes the guard works harder then the band at times, just know that you should never piss off a guard person who knows how to handle a 6ft flag, a rifle, and especially a sabre. we can keep tempo too. so just rethink what your asking here. just alittle piece of advice so you don't "accidently" get hit by one. stressed sweatdrop stressed heart

Phantom of the Forum What Horn said. And what's wrong with percussion? No section of the band is superior to another. neutral Finally I find someone who ahs some sense. We all work just as hard as everyone else as a whole. Now, on the individual level, that's a different story.

I'm a Guard girl, and it really pisses me off whenever people say that we're not a part of the marching band, or that we just "twirl flags." Excuse me, but have you ever tried to spin a metal pole, a wooden gun, or a metal stick all while smiling, marching, and doing your work on the same count? I didn't think so. Don't get me wrong, I love the band to death, but most Guardies don't insult the band kids because we know how much work most of them put into what they do!! It'd be nice if we could all work together and love each other and play nice!! (Or I WILL hit you!) =]
As for why Percussion and Guard are grouped together, if you go to a Winter Guard or Drum Line competition, you'll notice that a lot of the time they're being held at the same place, on the same day. Whenever we had a Drum Line, we would go to the competitions that we shared together, and helped each other out with the tarps and equipment and stuff. They're both just too awesome to be put anywhere else, so why not put them together??

Speaking as a percussionist, I would probably decapitate myself if I tried to twirl something and march at the same time. I can't even twirl a pole standing still! In my band, the drumline and the guard both have extra practices and work harder than the rest of the band and while yes, we have to learn notes, they have their own "notes" so to speak. Whether it's a beat on a drum or a certain formation, both groups have to know what exactly they are doing on every count. In that sense, I don't think guard and percussion are that much different. Additionally, in general, if you mess up playing something in a drumline, unless it's major, chances are the guys between you will cover it up. If you mess up in guard, you have a big shiny pole or a big colorful flag and people are going to look right at you. That's a lot of pressure I wouldn't want for myself, so I have a lot of respect for the guard. Just my thoughts on the matter.

it's not that hard to spin a stick sad I do it all the time when I have to sweep. Mostly guards off of the count. They get in the way, you get hit with your poles because you can't control them, and I'd like to see one example of a good guard who can actually spin their flags at the same time. I have not once seen that. Plus their counting is different so band is on one beat while guards doing something completely different.
Besides, percussionists spin their sticks all the time. . . it's not that hard either.
And guards mostly just with the band during the marching band season. They're not there for concert band or anything.
They're just there to make us look good. But mostly, they dont.

hey i got a question for you. who the hell is your band director and guard director, cause dissing other guards by saying that we can't spin is not just rude but plain out losing dignity for the band and the guard themselves. you better rethink what you type cause, if you go on youtube, and look up gaurds, im pretty sure as damn hell there are a lot that can spin in time, and so what if were on a different coun't than you we have to go by counts and the music. try doing what we do for an entire week, then tell me how frekkin hard it is. we put as much time and effort into what we do. DON'T DISS OTHER GAURDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stressed stressed stressed stressed stressed stressed stressed stressed
