This is only about my third hour on Gaia, and I haven't yet figured out well... anything. I hear the main way to make money is by question, but I don't get it. Can anyone help?

You heard wrongly. The quests you are thinking of are not money making, but money saving.
You can:
Start a quest thread in the Charities forum and hope people will donate
Play the games which grant gold
Post a lot
Learn to draw avis and sell your art in Shops
Learn profile codes and design custom profiles and sell in Shops
Quickest way:
drop some real-world cash on Gaia and buy stuff from the Cash Shop, then sell in Marketplace.
