I was thinking of doing marching band with my bass clarinet. I played a Bb clarinet in marching band last year. I started playing bass after that, and became pretty good at it ;D My question is, if marching on bass hard? When I started Sr. High Band on bass (I got moved up xP) I had to use a neck strap. Since I was crammed in the back row, It was difficult for me to hold the bass clarinet. The side keys dug into the side of my finger D:. In marching band, I will probably tighten the neck strap.
Anyway, any experiences marching with bass clarinet?

Well my friend Ben marched bass clarinet in a parade, and he didn't seem the least bit tired, even though they marched all the way around the block, which was really like 6 blocks, and played their parade music then the field show. So I guess it's not hard.

My friend marched one. As others have said it wasn't that hard for him. Its like a big sax. And you could also get a harness for it so the weight is more supported, as opposed to just a neckstrap.

That seems like it would be awkward unless either you have experience with the Bari Sax or are a very tall person. xD I had a friend who marched bass clarinet and they said it was kinda like marching bari sax. I suggest building up the muscles in your arms if the keys are digging in. Expect calluses on your hands/fingers for a while, but if you take good care of yourself and the instrument, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. More power to you!

Marching the BCL isn't hard at all. The hardest part is getting your teacher to let you march it! Seriously, when we got a new BD, he let the Bass Clarinets march for his first year because that's what the BD before had done, but the next year he cut them out! Our BCLests were a bit po-ed that they all had to switch, pluse the year after we got a whole bunch of BCL players that were so eager to play them in regiment. Their hearts were broken sad
But back to you, just build up your muscles, just like any other instrument you march with.

Marching Bassie is NOT very easy, in my opinion. It is hard enough to go from Ab to B in a concert, but it is even harder while marching. If you use a saxaphone harness, it makes things a lot easier. If your neckstrap or harness is bad, you end up ballencing all of the bassie weight on your thumb, which is NOT very fun, expecialy in a 8 minute field show.
Then again, I am 5'1, have notoriously bad wrists and tiny hands. Biulding up your total arm strength will definatly help you out alot. And getting that perfect neckstrap that keeps the bassie from digging into your hands.

Well I play all types mainly bass and Marching with it is kinda heavy. It requires a lot of shoulder and arm strength. Which in time you get used to it.

well i play bass clarinet so i understand. i played in the marching band and it messed up my performance like i would squeek alot and my reed would mess up. its easy to, of course u have to adjust the neck strap but other than that its simple. ive been playing for about 3 yrs and i play like a pro but marching is hard for me especially when marching the instrument shakes alot and u have to control it. heart bass clarinets heart

I play saxophone, some of my friends march with their bass clarinets, and it's not hard. They march just normal with bass clarinet.
