It's sometimes called a pictogram, or a dingbat.

There was a popular TV in UK based around these called Catchphrase. (i'm including this clip as it seems to be the only one I can find on the net...viewer discretion advised. There's nothing bad in it, and this did go out on the air, very funny, just be aware maybe classed as nsfw; a bad case of accidental innuendo.)

My solution in white(highlight to view):Wouldn't give a second glance (or slight variation on it).

You my friend are correct... There's also a game called Whatzit that is based on these as well... some are rather easy... others will have you tearing your hair out. rofl
