The Children of the Red King seried by Jenny Nimmo is usually referred to as Charlie Bone do to the fact that the titles all have "Charlie Bone" in it.

They're rather like lighter versions of Harry Potter. The characters are separated into Houses based on their specialty (art, music, and drama) and there are Prefects and Head Boys and such. Endowed children, like Charlie, have a magical talent. All of the magical children have a different ability, and are in some way descended from the Red King. For example, Charlie can travel into photographs and paintings.

Throughout the series, Charlie is searching for his father, who mysteriously disappeared when Charlie was a baby. He suspects his evil aunts were somehow involved.

The books in the series in order are:
Midnight for Charlie Bone
Charlie Bone and the Time Twister
Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy
Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors
Charlie Bone and the Hidden King
Charlie Bone and the Beast

There's a new one out, but the name escapes me.

The first 4 books are my favourites. The character I love best is Paton! heart I also like Fidelio, Olivia, and Billy.

I haven't read the most recent book. The last two books weren't very good, so if this latest installment falls short of the mark, then I won't read the series anymore. However, I'd certainly recommend the first four books to anyone that enjoys quick childrens fantasy books. whee

I read the first four books Pre-Harry Potter. I'm afraid I've forgotten most of it because it's been quite a few years. I do remember I enjoyed them quite a bit though. (Goodness gracious, that was a long time ago. But reading this has brought back some of my memory smile )

I'm afraid I've never read the series, though I have heard of it.
