So, I was just told that I was using an incorrect pronunciation of 'either.' I say it, "ee-thur." Webster's dictionary says I can say it ee-thur way. My opponent refuses to read the phonetic spelling to see that I'm right.

I was once told that I pronounce my NAME wrong. My bloody, ********, name. The other party claimed that with the second "A" in "Aaron" it should be pronounced awe-ron instead of air-ron.

By-the-by, there is an English name, Featherstonewaugh, that has five different appropriate/accepted pronunciations. Not among them is feather-stone-waugh...

Man I hate it when people correct my pronounciation. sweatdrop Both pronounciations of "Either" sound fine to me. If that person continues to berate you on the issue, just tell them, "Yeah...ok, while you're splitting hairs over this, I'm gonna go move forward with my life." xp

I say it both ways. : )
Most of the time I say "ee-thur" /ˈiːðɚ/, but "eye-thur" just fits better in some cases.
I also <3 the IPA, especially for English, where our pronunciation is so erratic.

I mispronounced "sieve" for the longest time. razz Annnd since my name is not spelled in a way that makes much sense phonetically, people are constantly calling me "Tay". /ˈte/ˈ

I pronounce it both ways >.> Tell the guy he needs to get a life >.>

I remember at graduation, during the rehearsal thing, we were supposed to tell the teacher that was supposed to announce our name how exactly to pronounce it (and what our name was, via a little slip of paper we were supposed to bring with us >.>). No one ever says my last name right. But I figured he would get it if I actually told him. However, he wrote down the phonetic spelling to help him 'remember' it and I kept trying to tell him that that's not how it's pronounced and he essentially told me "well tough luck, that's how I'm going to say it." >.< GR at him.

Ok so I kinda got off topic there...just a bit...sorry sweatdrop

This kid at my graduation was named "Capobianco." It's pretty easy to pronounce - "Cap-o-bee-on-co." At graduation, they called him "Cappa-bi-ankle."

I use both pronunciations based on the context. I'll use "ee-thur" and "eye-thur" interchangeably, sometimes in the same sentence.
Here's some examples of how context affects the pronunciation:
"Either one or the other."
--In this sentence, I use "ee-thur" as the main stress point of the sentence.
"Either way you go, it dead-ends."
--In this sentence, I use the "eye-thur" pronunciation since it is not the focal point of the sentence.

Of course, had I desired to I could have used the other pronunciation in either sentence. It's all a matter of preference.

I mispronounced "sieve" for the longest time.

I've heard it pronounced both "Seeve" and "Siv" so I think it depends.

._. It looks like "seeve". But people here call it a "siv", so I just go with that.

I had a law teacher who refused to pronounce "indictable" properly. She shouldn't have been teaching law, and English was her first language. =/

xd That reminds me of my roomate's boyfriend when I was in college. He always said "Pacific" instead of "specific". I felt stupid because it annoyed me so much. xd Like he would even say "Pacifically" instead of "specifically"
