I'm Capri, by now you all know who I am, though I have changed my name a time or two xD

This is a pretty straight forward thread.

||Take what you need and leave the rest||

In here there will be a list of useful resources that are free for all to use.
Anything that helps you you are welcome to.

It is updated as often as information comes to me from whatever sources, be it other Gaians or information that I stumble across or come up with on my own.

Feel free to forward information to me that has helped you that you want to share with others.

I apologize now if the information starts to get out of order it's bound to happen when the post box-thingies get full xD

Also there is A LOT of information. I won't apologize for that though. I've read them and use them User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

[Resources: Descriptions]

❣ ||Random Introduction||

[x]Setting is the place and time where your story is set. It could be a different planet in the far future, present-day rural Northumberland, or 14th century Egypt.

If you think your descriptive writing may be getting repetitive or you have difficulty describing, then remember this - when someone reads your story, they will be forming their own personal picture of how your world will look in their own head. Maybe you only need to give them enough raw data to let their imagination get going. Try it, you may find that your writing flows better as well.

If you’re writing action / fight / battle scenes and are having trouble describing the scenes a good starting point is to watch a movie with some good fighting scenes in and then go away and describe what you’ve just seen. (Gladiator is an excellent example of historical one-on-one and mass combat battles.)

The following is going to be an insane and intense smash of information that I stumbled across and saved to my jump drive ages ago. I rarely direct people to it in its entirety but rather cut out whatever I want them to know or find useful. I'm going to cut it down as much as I can to bullet points.

I should Google a paragraph, bound to give me a link back to its original author. -=chintap=-

You have been warned, it's A LOT to read.

❣ ||Setting||

[x] Always be knowledgeable of where your story takes place. What would you see, hear, smell, feel, taste?
[x] Example 1: I lifted my face, letting the light and shadow dance across my skin. Bees hummed in and out of the pennyroyal. I inhaled its minty smell and continued on, delighting in the sound of my feet sliding through the leaves.
[x] Example 2: (Simile) The trees lashed and crashed against each other like drum sticks in the hands of a giant.
[x] Example 3: (Metaphor) The trees stood utterly still, statues in a living museum where no leaf dared to fall.

The Art of Description: Eight Tips to Help You Bring Your Settings to Life

Description is something that gets in the way of many authors. Why? Well, because it's so darn hard to write. And no wonder. If you're not careful, descriptive sequences can become static, even dull. Writing action and dialogue is so much more fun. On top of that, description incorporates so many elements. It doesn't just cover describing the setting -- it also involves descriptions of the characters' clothes and appearance, the "props" your characters use, the weather, and so forth.

If you're not very accomplished at writing description, then sometimes you might want to avoid writing it. But then, you can wind up with stories where people wander vague hallways or buildings, and readers don't get a sense of time or place from your story. A story without enough description is missing something. People who read a story that's lacking in description might ask "Where does this take place? Are there buildings around them?" I must admit that often happens when people look at my early drafts.

At the same time, some writers err in the other direction, including too much description. They fall in love with their setting and can't help tell the readers about it. And tell and tell. This can impede the flow of the narrative. Imagine readers skimming your book in the store. If they see pages and pages describing the castle grounds, or the chic hotel, they will probably put it down and pick up someone else's book instead.

How bad is bad description? Think of bad description as being like that teacher who droned on and on and put the class to sleep. Good description is more like the teacher who got students involved by using anecdotes and making the class interactive. You don't want the descriptive passages in your story to put your readers to sleep, do you?

[.o1]Avoid Huge Lumps of Description

[x] Spread out you descriptions, don't toss them all in or you'll run out of things to say.
[x] It's okay to write multiple drafts feel free to describe at least one thing in every sentence. For the final cut out anything that seems like over kill.

[.o2]Make Description an Active Part of the Story

[x] Find ways to blend descriptions into the story. Eg: "Zara grabbed her mug and gulped it down, shivering when a few drops the ale trickled under her leather top."
[x] Descriptions should not sit there, make them move the story along, set the mood, foreshadow events or give us a sense of the character.
[x] Think of writing as scenes unrolling in a movie What do they interact with?
[x] Don't forget to trust in the intelligence of your audience. You don't have to spell everything out for them. You can make them figure out what something, or someone, looks like by dropping hints.

[.o3]Describe What Your Characters Would Notice

[x] If your character has been in a particular place dozens of times there are things that they will pass over, but they would notice a car the middle of a living room. It might not be this obvious and not everything might be picked up but if you were your character what would you notice?
[x] Keep in mind your character's personality, whether or not they're observant or oblivious.
[x] Think of writing as scenes unrolling in a movie What do they interact with?
[x] You always want to keep in mind setting and time period; a fantasy warrior and a medieval knight would not take note or pass of the same things.
[x] Avoid stopping the flow of your story to tell your readers all about how nice your character thinks a scene looks. Would you want to read a ramble about the rain forest? Or would you want to know what happens next?

[.o4]Words, Words, Words

[x] Use strong, active, concrete writing words when writing description. The stronger the writing, the better the description. Use concrete details -- such as the detail about the cold ale trickling down Zara's chest. Nouns and verbs are your friends. Adjectives and adverbs can be your friends, or your enemies, depending on how you use them.
[x] Devote time to your vocabulary. The more diverse your word bank the more diverse your writing will be.
[x] Do not riddle your writing with overly complicate words. Know when to use 'at the same time' and 'simultaneously.' Just because it's in the thesaurus, that doesn't mean it's the right word for your story.

[.o5]Use All the Senses

[x] Most writers tend to concentrate on sight and sound. This is natural as those are the main ways in which we observe the world. However, you can really bring a scene to life by including the other senses.
[x] The sense of smell is an important one. What's a Western romance without the smell of leather? Of course, don't forget the sense of touch -- very important in a romance, even when you aren't writing a love scene. Taste is harder to include as humans don't tend to go around tasting things unless they're eating, but be sure to include it during love scenes. BUT KEEP IT PG 13 xD
[x] Find some new way to describe the things your characters see and hear.
[x] Don't forget to describe their voices or the other sounds they hear.
[x] Try listening to people talking on the radio or listening to people on TV without looking at the picture, just to get an idea of the nuances of voice.

[.o6]Fit the Description to the Type of Story

[x] If you're writing an action-oriented romance, too much description will get in the way of the pace. James Bond isn't going to stop in the middle of skiing away from gun-toting spies to ponder the beauty of the Alps. He's going to get away from them.
[x] On the other hand, description will be a more important part of many slower-paced stories, for example, you might linger on descriptions of dark hallways in the old mansion and hint that there are ghosts there.

[.o7]Avoid Excessive Name-dropping

[x] It's all right to use brand names in stories. There are a few basic rules: 1) get the trademark correct; 2) don't use the trademark in a generic or incorrect sense; and 3) Don't portray the product in disparaging light. (In other words, don't have your characters getting food poisoning at the KFC.)
[x] While using trademarks is all right, using too many brand names is over-the-top and annoying. Don't waste valuable narrative telling your character's designer clothing, designer perfumes, expensive car, and designer pets.
[x] Don't avoid brand names altogether, however. Using brand names can be a good way to provide the reader with a quick concrete description. They provide another look into the character, setting, time, etc of what's being written.

[.o8]Don't Let Description Hang You Up during a First Draft

[x] Write multiple drafts and combine, cut out or add where you see fit.
[x] Read out loud. Hearing what's on paper helps to set the pace and rhythm of the writing and it's easier to pick up on misplaced or misused words.
[x] Read different material. Different author use different writing styles and different genres require different writing styles.
[x] Seek a second opinion. Find someone you're comfortable with that will help. Fresh eyes can provide invaluable insight.

❣ ||Character||

[x] The reader probably wants to know what your characters are like, not just what they look like, but the kind of people they are. The reader wants orientation so they know what to expect. They want to be able to predict your character’s actions, so they can tailor their responses.

Introducing a character by physical description is helpful.
[x] A new angel is to answer the questions, “What’s s/he like?” or “What kind of person is s/he?” or “What might s/he do?”
[x] Open with character’s qualities rather than appearance to give characters more personality.

Vocabulary
[x] This is always important. The more diverse your word choice the more options you have to work with.

Character Profile
[x] This is where your character profile comes in handy. Here you will add meat to the bones of that skeleton, refer back to it often as you write.
[x] As you develop the character’s profile remember to interact with your setting.

Some things than can be included
[x] What is his/her speech pattern?
[x] How does s/he move?
[x] How does s/he sound?
[x] Does s/he fidget when speaking?
[x] Suspicious?
[x] Confident?
[x] Thoughts and opinions?
[x] Dynamic or predictable?
[x] What does s/he feel?
[x] How does s/he convey emotions?
[x] Always keep in mind the character’s personality so that their actions do not seem out of place unless there is a reason. If there is a reason include that later, don’t leave readers hanging.
[x] Remember to spread out the descriptions so that you don’t overwhelm the reader or run out of things to say.

[Resources: Emotions A-D]

❣ ||Random Introduction||

Okay this one I've found IMMENSELY useful!

You can't write without emotions, whether your character has them (which they should) or you want to evoke a certain reaction from whoever is reading whatever you write.

They are important.

Sometimes you might get stuck so here are some things to get you emotional juices flowing again User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The Emotion Thesaurus

This is a blog I found months ago by authors Becca and Angela

What is an Emotion Thesaurus?
if you draw a blank on how to show your character’s emotion through a physical action (a beat), this can help. It offers an ‘idea bank’ for the times when you get stuck. You can scroll through the lists, and see if one of the ideas sparks one of your own.

The hope is that the ideas in the thesaurus will help you think of new ways the body exhibits emotions; instead of focusing on the face or hands, maybe think of what the feet are doing, or what the body might look like from behind.
