I am trying not to yell or cry here right now. Bear with me if things seem off (as grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.), but I've just had a very nasty experience and need advice.

I have made my school year availability known to my manager/supervisor THREE times and he still has not got it right! He still has me down for working Tuesdays and Thursdays that I CANNOT work as I am in class from 14:00 to 21:00!

What should I do? I filled out another availability form tonight. I also left a note with it from a customer service person (whom I get along with really well) and have turned in all my availabilities on time to his box like he says to do. Still my schedule remains the same (14:00 to 19:00) and I just CANNOT do it. One co-worker told me to just leave a note at customer service and tell him I will not be there those days (because of course I cannot) and just not show up. My brother says to go talk to the main store manager and tell him this whole story and see if he can get the said manager to work things out or possibly get him fired. My mom suggests getting the extended family (my aunt and uncle) involved and have them yell at the said manager.

All I know is I'm very angry at him and upset. I'm thinking about just quitting even though my brother/Steven says we need the income. I just don't think it's worth this hassle for an $8/hr job. What do you guys think?

I've dealt with enough imcompotent management in my years to know that sometimes you just have to push and push until you get your point across. What I would do in your situation is leave this manager a letter stating that you can not work those times and just as a plan B, tell several other managers this as well. I don't know how easy is it to get a job where you live, but if they continue to screw things up then maybe it is time to head off into the sunset.

No barely-better-than-minimum-wage job is worth stressing yourself out over, in my opinion.

Just don't do what I did.

When I worked at Toys R Us up until about a year ago, I was in a similar situation, so I went up the schedule (every printed copy I knew to exist) and simply crossed out those times with a black marker without saying anything to anyone.

It didn't much matter, because I found another job that same week and stopped showing up for work at Toys R Us. I didn't like that job enough to give any kind of notice.

i'd say that you should tell him, once again, that you will most definately NOT be able to work on those days. give him the reason, yet again, why you can't work. if it still doesn't get the point across, then i'd suggest hitting him in the head a couple times with a sledgehammer. (on second thought, that may not be a good idea sweatdrop )

if that doesn't work, then go over his head about it. if he gets fired for his incompetence, then he deserves it. but i wouldn't get totally bent out of shape about it.

Update!

I went today (this morning to be exact) to complain (I was hoping he would be there, but he wasn't). I ended up writing yet another note stating my desired times and days. I left it at the courtesy desk and they told me that another manager would get back to me on my work week schedule, but as of yet no one has called. I'll give them until about 17:00 then I'll either call or stop by again. The said manager (the one I detest at the moment) will not be in today at all. I think he did that on purpose. confused Well, thanks for your advice (keep it coming)! And I'll keep you updated.

I would write a detailed letter to his superior explaining your situation, and that you will definitely not be able to do the shifts you have been asked to do, but would be very happy to swap them for others. Obviously this guy is either an idiot, or just too lazy to do anything about it. Hopefully if you go above him, his superior will force him to sort out the situation for you! Good luck! 3nodding

Thanks for your advice, Doressa! Actually, I like that idea so much I might just do that if things don't straighten out this week.

UPDATE!

Well, the second manager (who's supposed to help work things out with me and the other said manager) and I talked on the phone tonight. The second manager (the one who I talked to on the phone with) said he was "going to have a word with" the other said manager tomorrow by the time I get to work by 14:00. I am so grateful for this; I heart that manager for all that he's done to help me out. 3nodding He actually is the reason I got back after being gone for about a year (when I left for Lawrence to stay with Steven) and he's done so much. I can't even thank him enough. I just hope that if the said manager gives me any trouble I can hide behind the second manager (maybe not literally, unless I have to). 3nodding

I had a situation similar to that. I gave my bosses my schedual and they kept doubling me (I worked two jobs at one place...and had two bosses...and they'd schedual me at the same time...) I also had another job, and they'd schedual me when I was working there. OR when I was in premarital counciling, which they knew when it was... OR EVEN during my Bible Study (I taught a 5th grade bible study) I worked over 35 hours a week even without them messing up my schedual.

Oh you poor thing! I hope the ***** of a manager you have gets things sorted okay for you. I think most of us have been there. I can remember when I had a job (as a student) and they wouldn't let me take time off for exams and study (is two weeks really that much to ask??). I was so irate that they wouldn't even THINK about giving me time off I quit the next day. I'm just lucky that I wasn't having to pay my own rent at the time (I was living in my parents granny flat).
Good luck with your study too!!

Well, word is that it is fixed and I will be on my regular school year schedule starting next week; however, now I've been asked if I wouldn't mind helping out on Sundays. confused I'm not really wanting to as that is the only day I usually can relax and enjoy myself, but I don't want to sound unhelpful (or not a very nice employee) either.

Now what?!

Maybe you could say that you don't mind doing the occasional Sunday, if someone is sick, but as a general rule you use that day to do work for school?

This is porbably the best solution to your problem.

That said, you're a better person than I am for worrying about being seen as unhelpful. I'd have said "No" so fast it would've made their heads spin.

Thanks everyone! blaugh I like that suggestion, too. I'll probably use that as my mom and I thought that'd work, too (even before I read any of your responses). 3nodding I really hope it works because I'm just a bit too nice I guess. sweatdrop Anyway, you've all been such a big help to me. heart Thank you everyone (I'll update you all on Thursday).

Well, here's the latest in this situation; I asked to have my time for Wednesday (only this week mind you) changed to 13:30 to 17:00 because I had some financial issues and things to settle with my late dad's estate. The manager didn't change the schedule. sweatdrop Luckily for me, the time was changed to Tuesday...BUT that still doesn't excuse the manager for not giving me the later time as I requested. xd

I was/am still thinking about asking for NEXT Wednesday off as there's going to be a career fair at school then during my scheduled workshift and I will be unable to work any other time to make up for it, but I'm not sure if I should still request off or not since he didn't even help me out this last time (regardless of the fact that the times were changed).

HELP! whee
