Okay, so, we got a new kitty (Misty, who's about a year old) and lately she's been peeing on things--mostly plastic. I wasn't here when she started doing it, but from what I understand Callie (one of our other cats) was sick and peed somewhere upstairs, then Misty got it in her head that this was okay started doing it all over the place even after Callie stopped...and she keeps doing it. ;_; We've put pet stuff on the spots she peed on that's supposed to get rid of the smell (and the stain), but how do we stop her from peeing where she's not supposed to?

We've yet to catch her doing it, but we're damn sure its her because Autumn has never gone anywhere but her litterbox and Callie only pees on things when she's sick, which she currently isn't.

Some places she's peed:
In the corner of the living room, on the carpet.
I had a bunch of yarn in grocery bags in a pile in the living room, she peed on that.
She peed on a grocery bag full of clothes that was on the kitchen table.
And on a bag of plastic canvas on the (OMFG LEATHER) ottoman.

Yikes, that's not pleasant.

Are all the cats still using the litterbox? Can you rule out a medical issue like UTI?

How is the harmony in your household? Do the cats get along fairly well, or is there a lot of stress?

Are the litterboxes clean? Any recent changes, like the type of litter, the location of the litterbox, new people or animals in the house, different cleaning solutions being used? Anything that she would feel the need to cover up the smell of?

At my mum's house Bart would pee on any plastic bags that were laying around - I guess something about plastic bags was just irresistible, so they always had to be picked up. If there weren't any laying around the peeing wouldn't be a problem.

Smell-wise, my brother smokes in his room, but there's no smoking anywhere else in the house. The cats are pretty good about not peeing in the house, but if they get into his room they will without fail, pee on his stuff, usually his bed. So unpleasant smells might be an issue.

Yup, they're all using the litterbox. Callie had a bladder infection which started the whole thing, but she's fine now.

Harmony...not so good, but getting better. Misty's the new kitty, and much younger than Autumn and Callie (who are 10 and 9, respectively). It's mostly Callie who has a problem with Misty; Misty and Autumn get along fairly well, they're even starting to play with each other a little.

Nothing new, no changes...maybe she just does like to pee on plastic. gonk And I did just catch her trying to pee on a plastic bag of polyfil that was on the floor under the table.

I had that problem when we brought in Mitzy, our longhair. She didn't really have any box skills, though she used it a bit. She likes fabric! D= What I did was keep the boxes exceptionally clean, made sure each cat had a box and then one extra, and then I kept what she liked to pee on out of reach as best I could. Every day I'd set up a few things within reach and put her in the room with them, than go out of sight and watch quietly till I saw her go to urinate on them. I'd catch her before or as she was doing it so I could shout and startle her into stopping, then I put her into the box and let her finish there. It took me about a month, a few hours a day. She's box exclusive now and has been ever since.

I am no cat expert - but things are always going wrong in my house and with 13 cats I've dealt with a little bit of everything.

These are the reasons I know for cats leaving puddles of pee love.

1. Change in environment. i.e - New cats, Re-arranging furniture, lots of new things in the house.

2. Female cats will use it as a territorial statement.

3. Stress - all forms, change of food, routine, feeling ill, being scared.

Some of these were mentioned as well as the norm, dirty litter box, change of litter..etc. Cats also have a very sensitive Urinary Tract so thats always a possibility.
