I would like to know what you all think literacy is. This is how I want it explained:

:: Give me a paragraph with a minumum of seven sentences describing what you think it means to be literate.
:: Give me one simple sentence describing what it means to be literate ("simple" is used rhetorically to mean a literal simple sentence; not compound, complex, or compound-complex).
:: Describe literacy with one word that is not a mutation of "Literacy".

Just curious. Please answer all three in one post seperated by two lines each question. I would appreciate it if no other posts were made regarding random or needless issues; those can be taken elsewhere. This is for enrichment.

And hello everyone. x3

Slight OOC moment: ILLY!!! *tackleglompsnuggle* I missed youuuuuu~

*ahem* Anyway:

Literacy, as defined by the dictionary, is the ability to read and write. But because of instant communication (especially with the internet), it's much more "convenient" to abbreviate things, especially "nonessential" words that we use in typical conversation. It's even easier to send a mere question mark to mean "Huh?" or "What do you mean?" in a message. Since when is a punctuation mark a stand-alone object in the English language? It's lazy, informal, and down-right nauseating. I think literacy has taken on a broader meaning than its literal dictionary definition. I believe that literacy has come to mean, "the ability to read and write AND USE IT PROPERLY in this day and age".

Literacy is the decency to type out everything instead of abbreviating.

Literacy.

Definable in two ways, literacy is very definite and also abstract. Literacy when applied to role playing or using internet communities or gaming is usually described as being able to shoot out a paragraph or more to describe the appearance and nature of a select character's action. Or it could also be defined on the internet as using all your vowels and practice what elementary school grammar classes taught you. It's a lot like eating all your vegetables at dinner when you're little, people older and smarter than you praise you for it, but your peers think you're ridiculous. Where as the government defines it as being able to read and write. You could use either to define it, but sometimes literacy creates controversy and taboo. (Ever had one of those literate arguments? They suck.)

Literacy is the triumph of slight work ethic and practice over sloppy "let's just get this stupid crap done and over with" idealism. Practicing literacy anymore is generally a delicacy only served on Thursday when the moon is full during a planet alignment set only after the zombie apocalypse in the buffet of existence. Unusual, but pleasant.

Literacy is uncommon anymore, but also making a comeback.

Diligence.

Sorry for the two paragraphs instead of one. sweatdrop

Literacy is the ability to successfully relate any sort of written communication, as well as receive such information. Those who simply do not care to at least try to capitalize, punctuate, and at least have coherent spelling generally are classified as illiterate, thus suggesting that literate people do the opposite. Literacy is the decency to take the time to form complete sentences in a manner both efficient and proper without resorting to +yp1ng l1k3 +h1$. This decency translates into anything that will be read or written; following simple guidelines, like writing a paragraph or an essay, or detailing a how-to layout, or whatever else is called for. By making an attempt at something better than laziness, some form of literacy can be achieved. By striving to be better, with better grammar, punctuation, and all other aspects of writing, literacy is improved upon. Literacy is ever growing knowledge of the written word and the ability to utilize it properly.

Literacy is any positive grasp on the specified language and the common courtesy used within the written world.

Knowledge.
