A Dibbun's Morning
By: XisTiger
The sun began to arise to the East and gave an orange glow to the trees surrounding Redwakk Abbey. Arfell, a squirrel dibbun, arose from his bed an rubbed his eyes. He turned over to his mouse friend, Senfur, who laid snoring like any other dibbun would do likewise. He shook her awake with constant shoving. She shrugged at first then turned over to fall of her bed. Arfell quickly placed his hand over her mouth before she let an outburst of a scream. Senfur rubbed her head between her ears. She looked out the window into the sunny morning, then to Arfell with his mischievous eyes. Today was their chance. Arfell grabbed Senfur's paw and silently slid down the stone stairs of the passage. On their way down, they slid by the sickbay. Inside was Brother Halew snoring louder than any dibbun had ever heard! Senfur gave a quick face of disgust, and continued her way down the stairs with Arfell. By the time they reached the bottom of the stairs, they became more aware in the Great Hall. There was a great chance that Foremole was wide awake, making breakfast in the kitchen. Arfell peered over the edge of the kitchen wall. All was silent. Foremole had overworked the previous night and fell asleep on a barrel and sack. Senfur was releaved and slipped into the cabinet to return with his hands full of candied chestnuts. Arfell clasped his hands in joy. Today was their lucky day.
After filling themselves with candied chestnuts, they strolled out into the Abbey Orchard. Their faces were full of red and blue from the eating they had done on the berries. Arfell fell back against a tree and stared at the direction of the rising sun. "Isn't it a wonderful day?"he asked.
Senfur could not help buy nod I full agreement. There they sat until the sun's warmth covered them and sent them back to sleep, not thinking of what would happen if they were found. Rather, they fell into a hidden chamber they had created inside the tree and the elders never found out. They were the most cleverest dibbuns you could think of.
Who knew they could grow up to be warriors in defending Redwall Abbey against vermin?
