I had an epiphany today, humans of 21+ I hate my job. It's a long, terribly uninteresting story as to why and I've already decided to spend the next week or so looking for a new one. But, hey, at least I got a thread out of it so it's all good! I believe we had a job-related thread many months ago, but that appears to be lost in the ether now, and I was just curious: "What do my fellow guildies do? Surely they're better off than I am." So, use this space to talk about you do, what you'd like to do, past jobs you've had (good and bad), ect. Discuss: 1. Your first job. 2. You're current job. What is it? Like it? Dislike it? 3. Your dream job. The one thing you'd love to do for a living more than ANYTHING else in the world. 4. How Headhunter is neither non-human or Spike Lee. Bous Material: I've uploaded my three favorite occupation related songs ever for your listening pleasure . They're (relatively) clean lyric wise and you should totally play them while you're at work. You know you want to. http://www.zshare.net/audio/8108984f186fdb/"Shove This Jay-Oh-Bee" by Canibus and Biz Markie (anyone who has seen the movie "Office Space" should already know this one) Lyricshttp://www.zshare.net/audio/8110004cde94d7/"I Hate" by Overkill Lyricsand http://www.zshare.net/audio/81092630d1d417/"9-5er's Anthem" by Aesop Rock Lyrics

let's see here... my first job, and i DO consider this a job, was my "landscaping" business i had when i was 13. i did all the things normal 13 year olds did... mow lawns, rake leaves, shovel snow, you know how that goes. but i was actually MAKING money doing it. i had regular clients that would call me twice weekly to mow their lawns and stuff. my weekly income with that was over $200 a week. not bad for a kid.
over the years, i've had many jobs. i've been a roofer, a construction worker, a cashier, a mechanic, a cook, a dishwasher, and bar security.
currently, i've been working the past 1 1/2 years at a machine shop called modern industries. we make components for big rig turbochargers. i'm a cnc machinist/assembler. when i'm not running the machine, i'm putting together the compressor housing assemblies. it wouldn't be a bad job if it wasn't so tedious. not to mention the pay sucks. i was hired on at $9/hr and haven't seen a raise yet. oh, and the majority of my coworkers are morons... and the supervisor is clueless about anything shop-related.
my dream job would be for me to be independently wealthy. i'd open my own speed shop building custom cars and street rods. i have a love for all things fast and brutal. so i figure that i'd love to do that type of work over anything.
and as for headhunter being neither non-human nor spike lee, well... how do we know?? he could be some alien incarnation of a spike lee ninja or something.

well, currently I work at a local florist shop...it's fun, sometimes (Valentine's was a NIGHTMARE!! And mother's day promises to be worse!!) But for the most part it is very laid back. I do all the computer work (taking orders and technical work), but I also arange at times and deliver....and c'mon, no one is mad a a flower deliverer...you always get a smile!
my first job...well, other than the usual babysitting when i was younger, my first job was at Winn-Dixie...yay? After that was a string of retail shops, travel agancies, then lawyer and cpa offices as a secretary or office manager. All fun, at times...I will NEVER work retail again!! I swear!
My dream job....I don't know...I know working with computers. I love doing technical support, fixing computers, hardware, software...but i also love graphic design, and that's what i went to school for initially. i just want to work somewhere tha pays me good and has a laid back atmosphere where I can either create or restore. I haven't found that place yet.
As for headhunter...I've heard that he was an experiment created by the government sent out to confuse the populace!!!

My first job was at a grocery store. I was a bagger and a courtesy clerk. I had to bag all the groceries, clean up messes, assist in produce and meat, and spend an hour every shift in the hot Vegas sun getting carts.
Add to the fact that my dad got me the job, and tada, it was officially the worst job ever.
Now, I'm a high school teacher. I teach Debate, theater, math, health, and finance. (Small school, so all the teachers teach multiple things.) I really like it a lot, but I don't like some of the classes I teach. I really don't think that a 24 year old should be teaching kids about how to handle their money, and teaching sex ed was highly uncomfortable, but other than that, my kids and my programs are pretty great.
I kinda do have my dream job now, but I'd rather be teaching some different classes. I really like teaching math, debate, and theater, and if I had my choice, those would be the only classes I taught. Oh, and if I could make six figures as a teacher, that'd be cool too.
I'd say spike lee. That being said, any chance I can get courtside for the Knicks?

1. My first job was as a Server/Food Runner at a local bar and grill owned by a neighbor of mine. I love the place because I know what nice people my former boss and his wife are. Food service wasn't my shtick though. I did get hit in the crossfire of a ketchup/mustard war once, get tipped half a pickle, and sneak french fries off of plates in the back.
2. I work as a night auditor at a hotel. I love it. I get to crunch numbers, make coffee, tidy up, and feel in charge for 8 hours. It's one of the most empowering jobs I have. I work with a great team of people and have a very approachable manager. To put it this way: between hearing my boss talk about getting drunk and watching Inu Yasha, hearing Tom's amazing rescue of a guest from a malicious lady bug, and watching Todd put wadded up tissues in our germ-a-phobic director of sales' box, well it makes my job fun. I love my job because when I'm alone on site I have a specific set of tasks to accomplish in a reasonable amount of time. I set my own pace and when we're not busy I can enjoy a slightly longer -paid- lunch break. Also, the guests are much nicer than the customers when I worked as a deli.
Worst Job: Quiznos stunk, and getting kicked by a five year old as a paraprofessional wasn't pleasant either. But the award for worst job I had goes to the Deli. I worked in a grocery store known for it's cheap-ness. The house wives were absolutely rude, difficult, and otherwise miserable human beings to deal with. Despite being in grad school at the time I was regularly demeaned as being "uneducated". The problem was that management condoned that behavior from the customers. Management was terrible, one manager in particular made it a point to take away every piece of joy on our job. She also would rip you to shreds with a smile-- perhaps the real life Delores Umbridge. And I would like to make the disclaimer that I'm sure many house wives are very nice women and decent human beings. I think most of the problems had to do with the attitude of people in my area. Yonsan can vouch that people where I live tend to be very high strung.
3. Dream Job- Something where I could put on all the hats I love so much. I'd love to simultaneously be a writer, do some acting, incorporate photography, and otherwise go on a creative bender. Essentially the job for me is probably BARD.
4. Headhunter is human because he does such nice things for all of us. Despite him being totally ninja--totally--- he is really a sweet heart deep down inside. Headhunter is not Spike Lee??? But Spike Lee is so cool. So therefore if Spike Lee = Cool and Headhunter = Cool then obviously Headhunter = Spike Lee. Ha Ha Spike, we have unraveled your identity!

My first job was in retail, with a store chain that has since gone out of business. It didn't pay the greatest or anything, but strangely enough I did really enjoy the job. Or maybe not so much the job, but the people whom I worked with. They were seriously the best, and I still keep in touch with a few of my co-workers from then today. smile
The second job I held was an under-the-table sort for my friend's father. He has his own little company where he supplies auto mechanic with radiators, fuel tanks and other such car parts. My role in this was as to deliver the part to their destinations. It wasn't a bad job, but I wasn't to thrilled with it.
And again my most recent job (which I just recently got laid off from after almost a year gonk ) was again with retail, working in a shoe store. It wasn't so bad really, but I have to say that as much as I hate being jobless at the moment I'm glad I got laid off when I did. The company has been going downhill pretty fast, and I was getting trampled all over by the company. I should have been getting much more then my $8 an hour for all that I was doing there.
Anyway I'm on the prowl for a new job, and I'm really hoping I can land something in a bank. I'm good with both money and people, so why not? Plus, there's always room for career growth in banks.
Wish me luck! biggrin

My first job (outside of the world of babysitting) was atcually at SWIC (local community college) as a student worker (slave). I was in the Planning and Evalutaion department, but spent a lot of time in Payroll and Human Resorces. I got the job because they needed someone to organize their filing system. WHen I finished with that, they didn't have much else for me to do so I got to spend all day sitting in front of the comp doing absolutly nothing but RPing.
My current job is at a hotel, as a "Guest Services Rep," or front desk clerk. I like my job most days. I enjoy meeting all the odd people from who knows where. Some how or another, I have found myself being what most people would call an Assistant Manager there, but I really have no title other than being a GSR. It's rather scary when my manager asks me for advice about stuff she should already know. O_o Now granted I do have management experience. I was a store manager for a Subway for almost two years, and I was a shift manager at a Quizno's for just over year, so I don't complain to much. lol
My dream job...I would love to work in biology lab. I'm slowly but surely working towards that goal, but if that falls through I am also considering teaching. If I do end up teaching it would have to be highschool, I'm too much of a smart a** to teach anyone younger than that. lol
As for Headhunter being neither non-human or Spike Lee...well are you Bob Barker then? Because I'm fairly sure that Bob Barker is a vampire...

Headhunter Discuss: 1. Your first job. 2. You're current job. What is it? Like it? Dislike it? 3. Your dream job. The one thing you'd love to do for a living more than ANYTHING else in the world. 4. How Headhunter is neither non-human or Spike Lee. 1. Well, my first job was as a sandwich maker at Subway. I had been job hunting for many moons and a friend of mine offered me the job because he was looking for someone. On my first day, he handed me a copy of Clerks and told me to watch it as my informational job training. "Do everything that Randal does." were his words of wisdom. From then on I've tried to do just that, but I have yet to knock her body out of the coffin. I did that job for about 4 months until my friend quit and then I was promoted to his job, managing the 3rd level of hell (was gluttony the third or the fourth? I can't remember, The 1st was the noble non believers, the 2nd was lust, the third I think was gluttony and the fourth was wrath wasn't it?). Then I quit when the new owners cut my pay to make me the lowest paid guy in the mall and went to work at an EB games with the same friend who hired me at Subway. 2. I have two actually, I work one day a week at a gas station that I used to work 50 hours a week at (not so bad now that I'm part time) and I work at a call center that calls UMSL Alumni and begs for money. The latter job is hell and I spent last night making calls and looking at the employment section of a free newspaper. 3. I would like to be the personal manservant to Shigeru Miyamoto. Barring him, Koji Kondo or Nobou Uematsu. Barring THAT, I don't know. I'm in college pursuing a philosophy BA with a strong eye towards switching majors, but to be honest I just don't know what to do with my life. Probably why this is my fourth year and I still am not close enough to graduation. 4. You aren't? Damn, there goes that bet that you are a former member of the Xmen who also made a movie that culminated in the throwing of a trash can through a pizzeria window.

With mom at her second job, Alex at his job, and me in a class i couldn't dodge out of it was very kind of you to do that. Sorry the kids were so rude. And just because the neighbors across the street drive WHITE American-made cars, have blond haired-blue eyed kids, and on occasion blast the national anthem of Nazi Germany at 3am doesn't mean they're prejudiced....errr... wait...

OOOOOOOOOOohhhh!
My first job was a cart pusher at walmart. I had to bring in the carts and lift heavy things and generally be everyone's b***h. I gained a total hate for that company and migraines that persist to this day.
Now I am going to college (and I have to treat that like a job cause I am near the end and this s**t is getting HARD). I work for one of the Profs as a research assistant and I more or less get to set my hours and do whatever I want. With a fully stocked lab.
My dream job would be anything on the bleeding edge of technology. Hopefully I can go from research assistant to experimental engineer or something similar. -SCIENCE!

1. First real job aside from being a babysitter; sales clerk it was by far the best job I had, although it didn't pay much, but I worked alone, and felt like my own boss doing almost everything (without a headache of another co-worker or boss) on a small vendor store, I had to move here in the states to quit this awesome job. 2. Currently I am working for wa-mart as a cashier. It doesn't have bad benefits, it doesn't pay as much though. But the problem, they don't pay their workers sometimes (and this has happen to me), accuse you as lier; they don't give a crap about their employees most of the time (you have to complain like a b***h for someone to understand if they care ofcourse). They have all these cameras, recorded all these stealing but they don't do nothing about those people that steal WTF?!. Thank goodness I'm not keeping this job for no longer than a year before school starts; oh no wonder that you see this company a lot on t.v. they are bad news. 3. Lets keep my dream job, a dream. I suppose it will die as a dream, I will forever be a job changer I believe; until I found a job that has the same feel as my first job, stress-free environment that all you need to hear are the customers complains and sarcasms, and not also by your co-workers or supervisors/boss because it is enough to make you do something harmful to these freaks who can't seem to mind their own business. 4. Oh too bad you are neither of them. It would be fun if you are a non-human, then I can play my part being the executioner ninja burning_eyes .

Interesting replies all around, folks!
As for me:
1. My first job was working in an office building doing basic, menial stuff like answering phones and what have you. It was something my aunt got for me and it was only a temporary summer thing. It was okay, I guess. I didn't really like answering phones all that much, but then I'm not a phone person.
2. Now I work at a department store unloading trucks and doing stocking and things like that. It's not really the job itself that I don't like, but the management I have to work for. The store director is one of these people who has a serious "Eff you, obey me." mentality and is constantly making us (the dock workers, as well as the regular store employees) drop what we're doing to do something that ultimately isn't as important or, sometimes, not even our job. Me, and many of the other people who work there constantly have to watch our backs for both her and her sniveling #2 minion, who herself is the kind of person that will smile in your face and stab you in the back. xp
3. Space explorer/star traveling rogue. Failing that, I'd like to write. Movies, books, TV, comics, it doesnt really matter. I just like to create and tell stories. I need to find a way to get paid to spin tales.
4. You're all correct....and incorrect... stare

Now just the purpose of this is a little update...I have an interview tomorrow for a possible new job. Unfortunately it's not a bank but a cashiering job at a grocery store...but it's still something that'll get me money. Since it's something that'll get me money...I am glad.
