I was just looking at Clover's chin and it's covered in tiny black specs - some of them look like they are stuck on the skin, others are on the fur, slightly away from the skin. Any idea what this could be?

They almost look like blackheads but I don't know if that even makes sense. I know cats can get acne, but there's no swellings or anything. I know plastic can be allergenic, and she does eat off a plastic place mat some days, but to my untrained eye this doesn't look like an allergic reaction or skin irritation. She didn't seem to be at all bothered by me touching them.

I know it's not flea dirt. The specs are quite concentrated around her chin and she has them no where else on her body, and Violet has no specs on her.

Any ideas? Could it just be that she's not able to wash her chin properly?

I'd take a photo, but I don't think there's anyway I'd be able to get one that was close up enough to be useful.

One of my cats has that too. I figure it's just dirt, since that's a hard place to wash.

I hope that's all it is. There just seemed to be a lot of it.

Well, it doesn't seem to be bothering her, so unless I get some indication that it's a problem I'm not going to worry about it overly much, though I'll probably mention it next time we have a vet visit.

Maybe I can get Violet to help her groom her chin. They do a lot of mutual grooming.

I've run into this sort of thing quite a few times.

1. It was indeed kitty acne. Often they would swell into huge lumps, turning from "black heads" to "white heads".
2. It was odd stuck on pieces of dirt/grime. Probably leftovers from a juicy meal.

Maybe try to gently scratch it? I guess it depends on whether it's flush with the skin or slightly above.

When it was kitty acne it got better with age... coming and going. But has stopped almost completely now.

I don't think you need to worry. smile

Yeah, I did a bit of research after I posted this and came to the acne conclusion. It doesn't seem to be bad, and there's no swelling. I wiped her chin with a bit of hydrogen peroxide and I'm going to make a point of feeding her on a plate instead of putting chunks of meat directly on her plastic placemat.

Hopefully there won't be any more serious issues with it and it doesn't develop into painful whiteheads.

Oh and a lady I work with said her dog got acne because he was allergic to the plastic bowl he was eating from.

As everyone else has said, it's kitty acne. My oldest cat has it, and has for a few years now. Nothing that bad worth worrying about though. 3nodding
