my little girl, grumbles, is black. well, she's not all black. she has a small white spot on her chest and another one on her belly. but those patches are usually not visible. i love watching grumbles because sometimes she looks like a fluffy black hole with two big, green eyes. i also love how she has black nose leather, black paw pads, and black toe beans. but her claws are white.

of course, all cats are pretty, but i am especially struck by how pretty black cats are. the first time i saw a black cat was at my aunt's house, when their cat had kittens. i fell in love with it at first sight. my mom grumbled that only witches have black cats. witches... black cats... yeah...

i have also heard that black cats are the ones who are least likely to get adopted, because people think they bring bad luck. i did notice that there were lots of pretty black cats at the shelter where i got mitts and grumbles. grumbles was at a different shelter for a year, but nobody ever adopted her there. she also came from a really bad kitty hoarding case. all cats who survived in that case, except for her, were already adopted. she was the last one who was waiting for a home. so she got transferred to the no-cage, no-kill shelter that i frequented. i fear for the black cats that end up in shelters where they are euthanized if they do not get adopted after a while.

on a somewhat related note, my kitty encyclopedia says that black persian show cats are high maintenance. you have to keep them in cool, dry places so their fur won't rust. no direct sunlight. poor things. grumbles has chocolate highlights in her fur, which i guess is what people mean by rusting. but they're very pretty to look at too.

i also read somewhere that black cats have a distinctive personality. not sure if this is true. if they do have a distinctive personality, i would guess that they're probably shy and cranky.

so anyway, i just want to hear people's thoughts and experiences with black cats. do you have one? would you like to have one? any experiences with people who say they're bad luck? is there a standard black cat personality? coco kitties?

Oh.. I soo know what you mean. Lol. I basicially grew up with black cats all the time. My mom grew up with 7 black cats and I lived with some for some of my life. some may think it'd get boring, or hard to tell them apart since they are always all black, but I don't think it's true only because I been with them long enough to know them.

=.= .. Oy.. My two cats fit under this perfectly. The girl is TOTALLY shy.. and I guess she's crany when I go by her. Lol. I swear she hates me. My boy, Takkun, the one that always likes to be near me, has a weird personality. I like to say he gets it from me since he's constantly by me. [running around randomly screaming, then stopping to stare and act like he didn't do it. Litterly meowing back in response in whatever I say for some reason.. and some others.]

D= That's so sad.. Let mer personally say I'm happy that you adopted 'em. =] I know we all can't save all the black cats in the shelters.. but you are giving some a good home =]

Hahaha.. Why yes.. ^_^ Got mine a while ago. HAD to have it since it's black and yellow eyes, just like my cat. Lol.

Chelsie's the same. She has white paws, white chest, white belly, and a white chin, but the rest is black. When she curls up, she looks just like a black cat. This picture is blury, but you can see the colors.
Sorry for the size

What a cute Tuxie you have, Potc!

I have two black cats, and I'm a HUGE black cat lover. Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted a black cat. I mean, I love cats, but BLACK cats are my favourite. I like to joke around that they're my 'familiars', but of course, my familiars are apparently as stupid as posts. I still love'em, tho. I'd have a whole house full, if I could!

Although I'm continually shocked at how no one can tell them apart. One cat is fluffy and big, the other is sleeker and smaller. One cat has a big round head, the other has a longer head with big long ears. One cat has green eyes, the other has yellow, and Timmy has white armpits and belly markings, while Pepper is pure black. They're like night and day, but everyone gets them mixed up⁄

I adore black cats. Rosette and Bart are both black with a white spot on the chest and some white hairs around the groin and armpits. I don't recall myself, but my mum tells me I was so excited when we got them, because I had been wanting a black cat for so long.

I think black cats are really lovely. It seems to be one of the most common colourings, but every cat is unique - I don't understand people who think all black cats are the same (or that all cats are the same for that matter). I wouldn't say that black cats have more personality or a certain type of personality... more that they're just like people - not all blonds are the same, and being blond doesn't mean you have certain characteristics.

Violet is solid black, except for a few stray white hairs here and there. Her colouring didn't have a lot to do with my choosing her though. She had a great personality and I figured her stubby foot and tail made her a poor candidate for adoption, so I took her. I didn't realize at the time that black cats are less likely to be adopted, though knowing that now makes me all the more glad I got her. The Winnipeg Free Press actually had a good article about black animals not too long ago: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/life/story/4084003p-4683202c.html
This was the inset: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/life/story/4084003p-4683341c.html

I've noticed that Violet is starting to turn brown around the paws, which is interesting and kind of cute, but really makes no difference in the end. I luff her just as much.

I do wish black cats were easier to photograph well. They look great in person; you can see all the details of their face and the shape of their body and the highlights and shadows on their fur, but unless you have good lighting and decent camera settings, you lose all that detail in photos.

Why thank you! I adore Chelsie's fur... it's so neat and fluffy.

Both my cats are black. I definatly have a large affection for the black ones. People often get them confused, but they have extremely opposite personalities and opposite looks. I think the only thing different about black cats is that you have to keep them inside on halloween. Teenagers think its enjoyable to taunt them because of the whole witch/black cat thing. But no worries, my cats stay inside all the time.

@iphreak: your mom had 7 black cats? oh my. i can imagine seeing 7 black holes moving around in the dark!

hurrah for shy and cranky black cats! <3

the coco kitty took on a whole new meaning for me also when i got grumbles ^^.

@potc: ooh, chelsie is gorgeous! look at that pretty little face! <3

@avy: roflmao, familiars as stupid as posts, eh? at least they're gorgeous. now that i think of it, perhaps grumbles is my familiar as well. unlike mitts, she likes simply sitting next to me wherever i am, which is usually on the table or on the futon (i call her my zen cat). of course, she can be pretty dim sometimes, too. she would keep her eyes open all the time... and she has big eyes. the problem is, sometimes when i carry her, strands of my hair would get into her open eyes and she would get very mad with me. i don't know if i can ever train her to close her eyes to keep out irritants.

@anlina: ooh, i'll check out that article right now.

i did notice that it's harder to photograph grumbles compared to mitts because i lose so much detail. flash photography makes her look all shiny and greasy, and the house lighting i have isn't that good for non-flash photos. some of the best pictures i have of grumbles take advantage of the fact that she's black (like the one of her under the bed that i put in the picture thread) or when there's just the right amount of daylight. or when i retake photos two dozen times until i'm satisfied.

but grumbles is fast learning that she should keep the pose she's in when i'm pointing the camera at her, like this:

@sqooky: omg, i didn't know that about black cats and halloween. but then again, both my cats are indoors all the time. aw, poor things, getting taunted by kids. i always like how i don't have to do anything special with grumbles on halloween. she's already in costume!

If they really don't pick up those beautiful black cats because of a stupid superstition, I'm going to be really pissed. The poor things are shunned because of their color? It's segregation! mad Prejudice!

The picture of Grumbles (adorable name) is awesome xd My baby doesn't even notice the camera unless there's flash, then she gets annoyed.

Our humane society doesn't adopt out any black cats for a couple of weeks before and a few days after Halloween, just cause of the high instances of returns and the increase in abuse of black animals at that time of year.

I have two black cats. Smokey and Dolly. I love them both very much. Smokey is an old grump but Dolly is sweet and very social.

thanks ^^. i had her for a few days before i came up with the name grumbles, and that's because she... grumbles. no, really. that's her way of communicating. she usually lets people carry her and the vet x-ray her and whatnot, but she'll be grumbling all the time.

how sad that black cats get adopted before halloween and then get returned after. they must've thought they finally have a home, but it turns out they're just props for an event. that's just terrible.

smokey's a great name for a black cat <3.

Well, I think some black cats are adorable. Just like every other cute cat.
But there's this one stray tomcat, whose obviously black, that lives in our neighborhood who never stops fighting with my cat. It's horrible. My cat would always get hurt form him having to get stitches.

But now my both my cats are older, and they don't fight as much. sweatdrop 3nodding

I love cats, especially black cats. Alot of people dont seem to like black cats very much. I find that cats seem to have personalities all their own. My favorite cat is a black cat, his name is Blackjack, (I know, the names not really that good, I have too many cats, im running out of names for all of them. smile ) Ill have to post a picture of Blackjack later, that is, when I can get a picture of him, My cameras not working right now.

Same here in Michigan. There were problems with people shooting black strays or other ppl's outdoor black cats, either with pellet/BB guns or real guns at Halloween. And the MHS has said that, even if it's an urban legend that people adopt black cats around Halloween to torture or sacrifice or something, they're concerned that the urban legend could prompt people to do cruel things, so they also don't adopt out black cats around that time of year.

I brought in a stray all black cat (Spooky) in October after letting him live on my porch all summer because of that, too. Although he was also looking sickly despite getting food and clean water, and had survived a tornado, so I figured he was due a safer life. heart
