In the normal devout Jew's life, does he or she feel a direct connection to the Almighty? Or are rabbis considered more holy and closer than the regular folk?

Every Jew has a personal connection with God. In most of Judaism, a rabbi is not considered more holy than anyone else, though he is probably more learned (or she in non-Orthodox communities). In every Jewish service there is a prayer said that is set as a personal, silent prayer to God. Also, a rabbi is NEVER needed to hold any kind of service, as long as there is someone who knows it well enough to lead it.
