Actually, last year's captain (aka this year's instructor) at my high school did percussion before she did guard, and occasionally did cymbals when needed. Last year two guard played cymbals for one event, cuz the one cymbalist who showed up SUCKED.
I played cymbals for pep band two years ago, and recently played em again at one of the games (when i got bored, lol). I'm not great....but I'm still MUCH better than the current cymbalists. The director lets me play when I want to. xd Not during the field show tho -- cuz there is no cymbal part for the field show! Yes, they suck that bad.
Incidentally...my friend wants me to play bass drum with him at Thanksgiving. Let's see if the director will let me try! whee
Any other inter-section switching? Guard doubling as percussionists, or vice versa? Or guard/percussion playing with outher sections when needed?

From my guard, we have 3 members who are also on the drumline. We do rallies and concert band with them and this year, our first year of winter competition we will be performing with them. the only thing we really dont do with them is football games and parades because we do our routine for guard (and they have enough for those)

No offense to guard members but: Our gaurd is either stuck up, mean, really nice but kinda clingy, and our 3 guys are gay.
It took me almsot an hour to teach one of the guy on gaurd how to play irish spring... and he still cant play it right and in the same tempo.
