The fact that you don't know for sure the person your talking to is of the same age, gender, speices, etc... is the distrubing part. Online dating is messy at best anyway. At least from what I've seen with friends.
A benifit is your less likely to end up pregnant at an early age if you only have contact with a monitor and keyboard.

see also: my post in the dating thread lol. you really don't know who's on the other end. i have a friend that investigates online predators. he's told me many horror stories. he also frequents a chatsite i used to hang out in, just for that reason. it seems that place was full of predators.

I think that it should be up to the parents to watch their kids and set guidelines, and the kids should have enough sense to tell their parents if something is going on.

It's not very safe because as someone said they don't know who they are talking to some times... but parents should be paying attention to what's going on and set rules like ^^ said.

right, it´s better to talk to there parents.
i guess if i got a kid i would try to look what they are doing in the internet.

If I had kids I wouldn't want my children meeting their future spouses online.
I met my girlfriend online. But I wasn't a teen when I met her. I was 24 at the time. She lived in South Western Louisiana and I lived in Star Idaho. I met her in the user room (back when Yahoo had user rooms) Punks/Goths/Freaks. We started chatting and then calling each other on the phone. Eventually I told her she should move here, and she did. We have been together for about 5 years now.
