Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed, for the European market, a new 40 gig PS3, this does suffer some limits compared to the 60 and 80 gig models however.
It only has 2 USB ports, it lacks the memory card reader (I have a launch North Americian 60gig model and I dont use them.. ever), and it also lacks, according to the head of SCEE, any and all PS2 backwards compatability, meaning those in Europe that buy it, will have to keep a PS2 as well for PS2 games, but when you look at the price of the PS2 now, its not a huge deal even if it does net Sony more money for you having to buy the cheaper PS3 and a PS2 (if you need a new one). Backwards compatability was sacrificed for cost, however the 80 gig version still has the software emulator.
As of yet, Sony Computer Entertainment America has not made any official announcments related to a 40 gig North Americian model.
EDIT: The 40gig is now confirmed in NA, along with a Spider-man bundle AND for Canadian Gamers, Sony has decided to except the fact that the US dollar is no longer so much different they have dropped the prices to reflect the cost, so it will no longer cost us $699 for the 80 gig model, but a max of $499. Futureshope and Best Buy have already dropped the prices to $480 and $450 Canadian respectively.

Yeah, PS3 hard drive is like a laptop hard drive. Just go to NewEgg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+1035907918&name=Serial+ATA150You can get a 160 GB or higher hard drive for the price of a 20GB 360 hard drive. I don't like this model. I don't get why BC was taken out. I mean its done by emulation, and isn't the emulation and crap stored on the hard drive? It just seems stupid not to include it.

Im with you guys, I love the fact my PS3 can play games from my PSone and PS2, however apparently the emulator, even though its software based in the 80 gig model, costs money. As of yet, Sony has only said they have removed it from the 40 gig model.
I believe this move was aimed at the people that are interested in a PS3 but crying about having to pay more for next-gen tech, so they cut it how they could. It might also increase the sales of the 80 gig model because of the lack of BC.
As for the HDD, Sailorcancer is right, you just buy a laptop HDD, pull out the old, drop in the new, and use the PS3 format command and you have a new, larger HDD. 3nodding
