I play Crash Cymbals on my school drumline, and i can spin my cymbals, but it feels like im going to rip my thumb off every time i spin.
Ive heard that if it hurts, that means your doing it right, but does anyone have any way to spin that wont hurt so much?

I love spinning my cymbals! But yeah, it is hard to explain, just try moving you thumb more or something. I'm making my section learn how to spin their cymbals.

yeah, spinning is fun. the senior cymbal player showed me how to spin better cuz we had spins as part of our visuals for or show, but i ripped up my left thumb. blood almost got on the cymbal. sweatdrop

Hmmm, that's kind of odd.
I've never been injured by flipping.
I usually start the motion and kind of let go with my hands and then take control again once they're in the proper place...you know? sweatdrop
I'm not sure if that made sense.

...you guys use your thumb?....maybe it's cause of my hands and strength but I can just move it with any part of my fingers and then hold on the the strap with my thumb. But I never really do it cause one time while we were doing it the strap broke and the cymbal went flying...scary.

I'm not sure if this is a "new" way. But we spin ours like your jumping rope. It looks great but it's murder on the arms.

It works best if you hold the straps down in your hand and just let your hand move in a circle. if you do it just right it won't cut your arm or thumb. Otherwise it hurts like hell and I'd advise on wrapping up your arms.

Just a thought. I came across this "new" way by mistake.

^ okay you put your whole hand in then hold loosly while you bring your thumb out and twist it so your hand looks like a closed fist but with your thumb out of the strap .... yeah...
i twirl the cymbals by taking my thumb out and spin it with m four fingers...

It's probably how you're holding the straps and the kind of straps. I was cymbal squad leader for 3 years. I would have to take pictures of how I hold them. Do you hold the straps or put your hand through the straps so they're around your hand?

Best use for a cymbal: visual protection from the percussion teacher when she wasn't wearing a bra... ewww.

What kind of cymbal? If they're just regular marching then it might be the way you're spinning it or the type. You're supposed to use your thumb to push your cymbal, I've never heard of someone breaking their thumb, but I suppose it;s possible. Usually it's the pinky that gets close to breaking.
