So they've revealed Metaknight's moves and, from the looks of them, he is going to be a no-nonsense High Tier character.

I was having a conversation with a good friend of mine and he said some stuff that made a lot of sense. He said he would like brawl to be a game where there's no character tiers, a game where all the characters when used competetively are pretty much on even grounds

he didnt mention any examples, and I dont play any fighters besides smash, really... but I would say that the old mortal combat games are a good example.

just think about it, back in the day of the original smash bros, before anyone knew about glitches, everyone had smash and everyone said they were the best, and everyone could put up a good fight against you; I really think those are some of the best memories I have with smash

The problem is that, in order to remove Tiers, all characters have to play the same exact way. Seriously, if you want to use Mortal Kombat as an example, all the characters played roughly the same way. They were roughly the same speed and strength. The only thing that caused variation between them was their move lists and appearances. Even then, their specials all traveled at the same speed and, from what I remember, did roughly the same damage. Everyone was a mirror image of another character. Honestly... How many "Ninjas" did they really need? Smoke, Noob Saibot, Scorpion, Reptile, Human Sub-Zero, Demon Sub-Zero, Rain, Ermac, and Chameleon; there was the female ninjas, Jade, Kitana, Mileena and Khameleon; then there was the three identical Robots, Smoke, Sector, and Cyrax, it was the most shameless character creation method... ever. Yeah... I'd prefer variation over a lack of tiers.

theyre a good example of what i mentioned in the last paragraph, but yes, they were pretty much clones of each other, but back in the day no one seemed to care.

besides, Melee was clones galore. and it still has tiers.

anyone know any good examples? DOA? i think tekken has tiers, eh? not sure, but you know what I meant. soul calibur perhaps?

not really sure, but I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.

ATTN: UNEDUCATED MASSES,

All games have tiers. All games.

not mortal kombat, apparently.

very first mortal kombat. every character is distinct to a degree and pretty much on even terms. no tiers.

the clones came with the sequels.

... There were also only 7 characters, each no more than three moves (and a fatality) of their own. Each moved just as fast as everyone else and each was just as strong. Also, as much as you'd like to believe, they are clones relative to one another.

They all had projectiles that moved in roughly the same way and at the same approximate speed. Scorpion's drew your opponent forward, Sub-Zero froze, and the other five just did damage and knockback. The only thing that seperated these other five from one another were their projectile animations.
Liu Kang's Dragon Kick was the same as Raiden's Superman which was the same as Kano's Cannonball. There were, again, only different in their animations.
Johnny Cage's Shadow Kick was the same as Sub-Zero's Slide and they didn't even change the animation for these two.
With only a few distinct moves left for Raiden (Teleport), Johnny Cage (Nutpunch), Sonya (Leg Grab and Wave Punch), and Scorpion (Warp Punch, which was only a backwards version of Sonya's Wave Punch) that's not exactly what I like to call "distinct to a degree." I call that a game with one character with 3 moves that has seven different looks.

And what's even worse, a short look into a Move List/Character guide leads me to read this sentence in Sonya's character guide:

Quote:
Sonya is the god tier of Mortal Kombat 1. She can be played defensively and offensively. All you need to win the round with her is just one Leg Grab. This is probably the most broken move in 2d mk game history after the Noob Saibot's fireball in MKTrilogy.

So even in a game with few characters that are still so similar, it can be argued that Tiers exist. Tiers aren't a bad thing. There will always be one character, move, card, car, monster, whatever that trumps many of the others. This is what I like to call "variety" and it leads to gaming evolution. Tiers exist and some characters are better than others. When a new version of said game with tiers is released, the developers do their best to tone down the better characters while bettering the worse ones. This leads to a totally new gaming experience and a fresh new start.

Even then, if you don't like Tiers, just stick to casual play. Hell, with my friends, I mandate that everyone choose random so that no one is always choosing Fox/Falco/Marth/Shiek and it forces players to play with Yoshi/Bowser/Pichu/Mr.Game & Watch. It makes the game fun for everyone because you might have a good character one round and one you hate the next, and vice-versa, so you learn to play well with all of them and still acknowledge which ones are better than others.

He is a very character. He will kick some a**.

After a while when the game has been out for months and I might be playing with my friends I think that Metanight will be a tough oppenant to beat.

everyone had smash and everyone said they were the best.

You're the best in the world, until you fight someone better than you.

As for tiers; They exist for potential/idealism.

Example: Ideally, a pro Falco should beat a Link, Mewtwo, Bowser, etc. Ideally, due to his moves. It's the on going debate between tiers and player skill. My opinion;

Tires don exits. xp

It comes down to player skill. I have a friend who plays a decent Falco; but I beat him with Ganondorf on a regular basis. Again; I have a friend who plays Marth; Beat him regularly too.

And my 'g' irl friend Elana plays Zelda, and she's lower on the tier list than Ganondorf, and she beats me all the time.

Tiers exists for potential. Not much else, in my opinion.

Well, duh.

Tiers only determine Who has the edge if the players controlling them are equal but they are there. For example, I play against my cousin alot. We are about of equal skill. He usually plays as Fox and Shiek, so I play as Marth and Falcon. Why? because If I choose someone like Pichu. I get my a** handed to me.

Any fighting game has tiers. They are real and they do matter. To say they don't exist is idiotic.

As I said, tiers are merely there for potential; idealistically speaking.

Example:

Gimpyfish. Fantastic Bowser player. Takes out spacies all the time. But according to tiers, he should lose, shouldn't he? I guess according to the logic that tiers matter, Gimpyfish sucks, Chudat sucks, and Taj sucks. Yet, they all placed in the top 10 at MLG this year.

I stand by my opinion.

Tiers don't exist; it's up to the player. Tiers are only a suggestion, as it were.

Yeah, but they are amazing players who can destroy anybody with any characters. If your an average player, playing other average players. Tiers help.
