So, why is everyone learning Japanese? We all have our own varied reasons... so let's hear 'em, ne!
Like many people, I got interested in Japanese through anime. Starting with some mainstream anime's like DBZ & Inuyasha and progressing to becoming a fansub fanatic. I am a big toy collector, and trying to collect anime toys made in Japan can be VERY frustrating! I also wanted to be able to watch anime without needing subtitles someday and maybe do my own fansub project.
Well, this has now grown to an all-out love of Japan. I have many j-penpals and love to surf the Japanese internet... and hope to visit Japan someday soon. I'd love to start a small import/export business, be a travelling businessman, japanese tours of my local area or translate anime's. But I have a LONG way to go. The more I learn, the more I realize I have a LOT more to learn. ha ha... rofl

I got interessted through anime, I was first fan of pokemon, then later on when that started to fade, I was fan of the original (fansubbed) Bishoujo Senshi Sera Muun. Still fan, haven't seen all yet but ok. blaugh I started to watch other anime like Chobits, Love Hina and DearS... Later I started listening to Jpop and using some romaji between sentences and such.. thats the reason I started =)

As many it all started with anime and grew from there. Alot of times I'm not in the mood to read subtitles but yet dubbed is just so bad. You miss key story parts and the voices are sometimes terrible. So this way I can watch without sibtitles or it being dubbed. Once I started looking more into Japan and it's culture I loved it even more.

Like most people, anime is what got me interested. Then, when I moved, I found out that my school actually offered Japanese as a class. At this point, I was getting pretty sick of French, so I dropped it and took Japanese instead. That...took a lot of begging on my part ^^;; My parents were kinda hesitant about it and they still call me a Japanese 'demon' whenever I speak lots of it at home XP They're Chinese, so the problems during WWII really affected them and their parents.
But I actually learn some Chinese from my Japanese class (ie. Kanji). They're grudgingly happy about that XP

But I actually learn some Chinese from my Japanese class (ie. Kanji). They're grudgingly happy about that XP Wow! That's got to be difficult! I know a lot of people in China really hate Japan over the various atrocities Japan has committed on China. But the older generation in the US does not like Japan for the most part, either. I remember my grandfather used to rant about the Japanese b/c he served in the Pacific campaign in World War II. But, truly, the Japan of today is nothing like the Japan of the 1940's. Much like how the Germany of today is nothing like the WWII Germany. And it's not like the US or other countries haven't committed atrocities in the past, as well. Anyways, I just wanted to repeat that I love Japan. The people and the culture are so polite and respectful of their culture and elders.

I, like many people, am learning japanese because of anime (Well, actually manga. I don't watch too much anime. It's too expensive). I also want to be able to speak with my cousins without just relying on their little English knowledge because some of them are REALLY hyper. *has images of Yukihiro running around the table screaming, "Uno! Uno! Uno!"* -_-;

I want to learn Japanese because I hope to someday go to Japan. Of course that's after I learn to play the bass really good, then hopefully I could join some J-Rock band there! ^_^
I know, it's a big goal, but it's what I really want. >.>
It really started when I started listening to J-Rock almost a year ago. I knew a little bit of the lyrics from tiny bits of Japanese I had learned from a foreign exchange student, but not much to actually get the songs.

Heh, think thats big? I plan to be a Japanese voice actor when I get to Japan. I remember when this all started 2 years ago when i picked up my very first Anime and got hooked on it(Azumanga Daioh was probably the one that cliched my goal). I was already a passionate fan of Japanese culture, and i was learning the language, and i loved to act, so it seemed like a natural step for me. And everu since then, U've dedicated myself to learning every aspect of the langage and every possile important dialect theere is *like Kansai-ben, for example* Yrah, i know they don't get paid much, even with those experienced actors, but its been my passion to act and write, and I'd rather go out chasing a dream and doing what i love than to live miserably in some cushy job I know I'll hate for the rest of my days. My basic goal in life is to be able to look back on everything I've done and say, "i've had no regrets about and i'd gladly do it again."

Well, Like most of yuu, I started through anime. I started watching anime in Japanese, so It was more 'Authentic' IN my mind, and I became amazed in the language. Now, I really want to learn!
Plus, wouldn't it be awesome to be walking down the hall, and just start yelling in Japanese? People would be like...O_o;
