I was doing my usual slacking off when I happened across this article over on Gamespot.com. It basically covers how a video game producer over in Germany spoke on what what he believes female gamers in general want to see in games and why more women don't play them in general. I thought some of his points were pretty interesting, if not a touch naive. What do you all think?

I don't think that I may be the best one to talk about this but being a woman I can simply say this doesn't always apply to all women. I have a female friend who absolutely loves the blood and guts and meaningless violence that some of the games offer. Of course she will only play like the Lora Croft games (sp) Or any with a female as the main character in the game.
Me personally I love the graphics in games. No matter what is happening in the game. Of course being a mom I couldn't very well play a game like that while my 5 year old watches, but I would indeed play a game like that.
Plus hubby is an ex-Marine and in the Marines that's what he did...I always have loved watching explosions....in a game (maybe it's morbid) sometimes it's cool to immagine that someone that is really getting on your nerves is the one that is getting blown up twisted
So in summary I would play just about any game that the graphics are kick butt!!

Being a female gamer myself I personal seem to more enjoy games that are gory; ie: God of War, Resident Evil and many more. Though I do find myself more actracted to fantasy more of then not anymore. I love games that take away "normal reality" and place me in strange worlds.
I can't say that every famale is like me and actually enjoys the gore or fantasy, but I don't think that they can say that every girl enjoys more reality based games either. Besides the age group that they are aiming for are younger teens who most of them at that point are more interested in going to mall and hormones than video games. At least that is what I think.

I haven't looked at the article yet, but I've had this type of discussion many times with my friend Tim, who is working towards being a game designer and is always interested in what I have to say... because he thinks there should be more games "for girls."
I really like games that let me do non-competitive tasks... I mostly play RPGs, but I like games like Harvest Moon, where the only point is to keep your farm running. I love Sim City, too. I have a secret adoration for Oregon Trail! Haha! But, I hated The Sims.
I don't really like action games... or shooting games... If I'm not playing an RPG, I'm playing something like a puzzle game or a racing game... my favorite game for DS is Cooking Mama... I really don't like anything that is competitive or actiony and I can't stand stuff that's bloody, I literally get ill.. one time I played Doom II and I got so sick I had to go lie down for a whole afternoon! I also like games like Guitar Hero and DDR.
Also, I REALLY like arranging virtual furniture and building virtual homes... if a game lets me do that, I'm really happy! I rearrange my Gaia house like twice a week, but I hate that I can't actually use any of the furniture. > sad
My least favorite parts of RPGS (even RPGs like Pokemon) are the battles. I like walking around, exploring towns, talking to people, but when I have to explore and keep running into battle after battle, I get frustrated and I don't want to play because it's so boring and repetitive. I rush through battles as quick as I can because they just bore me so much.. I wanna get back to exploring!
So.. uh yeah.. I'm probably a typical girl. redface
I need a nap.

Hmmm... I can see where they're coming from as far as drawing in the non-gamer girls. Those probably are the reasons most of them don't play. Myself, I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember. It started with atari and continues with my PS3. I don't care too much for excessively graphic gore, but your basic blood and guts don't generally bother me. My favorite games are RPGs. I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan 3nodding . But I also like to play action games like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil and I love fighting games and puzzle games. I used to play Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem as well. My most recent addiction is World of Warcraft. I just started playing two nights ago and can't wait to get home and play some more ^_^
Overall, I think most girls who are already gamers like the same games guys do. Of course there are a few exceptions, like NessaChan. That gaming company is just trying to appeal more to the girls who would prefer games like she plays. Those games aren't as common and so there's a huge potential market out there that probably doesn't even realize more "girly" games exist.

I adore RPGs, but I like games simliar to Sim City, and ones that are shooting games. Definitely a female lead character is always a plus. The Sims is sucky! ( Ooops..sorry for the language). I dislike strategey games.....I like the bare bones of conquering..I am a gal that is direct and like the passion of the simply destroying her victim. Although I do it with class and style.
With that said I am seeking a good new RPG to join.

heart yay@ FINAL FANTASY. Thanks Chrystiana for mentioning one of my faves.
Violence- I like action. Thus the love of FF7 (Sephy with his sword, blowing up reactors, the infamous scene of Sephiroth standing in the flames). I don't like shooter games though. My preferred form of violence is elegant sword play, martial arts-esque moves, fire destruction scenes (ironically, I had a house burn down when I was a kid yet I do enjoy fictional displays of it), stuff like that. Emotional violence? pft.
Female leads are nice- but not stereotypes of women--gah! I heart heart Samus heart because she is the original tough gal. Zelda isn't too shabby because unlike Toadstool she's more often captured for her magical powers or used as a political prisoner of sorts, plus she tends to help Link a Lot even when say... frozen in a crystal and hidden in Turtle Rock.
Male Chars- if female chars will have massive boobs and wear virtually no clothing it's only fair to have Squall in his sexy outfit, or Link (rawr, adult link, rawr).
I love battles, I hate laborious skilling up. I like boss battles best. And I enjoy having full powers in a game and having rockin' abilities.

Hm, as a female gamer, I find graphics to be the most important thing for me. I am way more drawn to anime-ish characters than to more realistic simulations like Second Life-like graphics. I also love fantasy storylines. World of Warcraft had me addicted for quite a while. In fact, I started playing Gaia as a sort of Warcraft nicotine patch.

Hey I heard of that game!! The male character for bujingai was modeled after Gackt...the j-rock singer... And final fantasy 8 was my first RPG game ever!! I got it as a birthday gift when I turned 14 and only last year I finally beat it >_< But yeah, I've been a gamer for a while and the things that I like best are games that are challenging like the puzzles in zelda, or have an interesting plot..like the wonderful products from Square inc.....(oh yeah I totally cried when Aerith was stabbed by Sephiroth after all the time I spent trying to make CLoud like her x__x, or when Yuna had to say goodbye to Tidus)...and the games that are just plain fun like Mario. I like a good zombie game too but I'm usually too scared to play games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill by myself so I rather enjoy watching my friends play it...Having a cute male character makes the games all the more enjoyable Oh yeah, and I also really like fighting games, the Tekken series is by far my most favorite. xd The ones I don't get though are shooter games (especially Halo), I get really confused by first-person camera angles and the controls for games like that @_@...and I agree with Nessa about games like pokemon that have constant battles..I get annoyed with them really quickly..and at least in FF8 I could turn off the monster encounters or just run away from the monsters like in kingdom hearts.
So in short I think its probably very difficult to pinpoint exactly what kinds of games females prefer since there are so many deviants from what was presented in that article...we all have our own different tastes I guess 3nodding

I'm not sure id I'd say that it's a preference in realism so much as a preference for a good story. I love the rpgs more because you have to think rather then have all the hand/eye coordination that you have to have for many games. I tend to prefer the RPGs like Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and I love Parasite Eve witch I think would fall more under blood and guts than realistic, though maybe I'm wrong. I do like some of the one on one fighting games like Street Fighter, though even that has a big rpg aspect to it.
