PostPosted: Wed Aug 08, 2007 2:01 pm

Because there assholes and they
all think that Goths cant be accepted in
schools because there "scary"
and "Emo"
People in my school think i have to be
a preppy girl just so i could be "accepted"
I say its bullshit.
I wouldn't pay attention to them,
Just ignore them.

I kind of have similar problems. A few of my female friends are 'ashamed' that I'm a goth. I've had a few of them nag that I should wear more 'normal' clothes and have even gone to the point where they've bought me new clothes for my birthday. Which I've never worn anyway.

But what I didn't do is talk to my friends about it. I didn't tell them what the subculture meant to me or let them ask me any questions they had about it. Because of this, it's caused the problems. They don't understand goth at all and because they don't understand it, they tend to think it's a bad thing.

My best advice is, don't do what I've done and keep quiet about it. Talk to your friends.

Good luck hun.

One of my friends has this problem, too. Only, she's not in highschool anymore. She has a full time job, and he has to endure middle-aged women scoffing at her and telling her that she'll regret it when she's older. She doesn't complain because she's also been a social miscast her whole life, and really doesn't care about the norm anymore.
Actually, she's totally proud of how she's grown up.

Because they've been sucked into society's belief that everyone should be normal and just like everyone else because that's the right thing to do. If you're not normal you're a freak.

I'm happy to be a freak. Don't give into them. They're obviously not good enough to be your friends. They don't respect you and try to convert you. I'd get completely offended and turn away from them.

I don't really have that problem anymore but when I did I back talked and proved them wrong constantly and proved what disrespectful &#*(& they were being to me and no friend should do that.

The media and popular culture have depicted the goth culture as violent, disturbed, and erratic for almost a decade. It's not the flaw of your classmates, as this is how everyone thinks. Nor is it the fault of "everyone", but rather, the fault of continued misinformation.

The best way to move past this misinformation is to address them plainly (and NOT aggressively) that the goth culture is based around music and artistry- not around ideals or common beliefs, such as hatred of humanity or Satanism.

*A good first step is to not carry yourself like a victim. "Since Im a goth my classmates never understand me... WHY DON'T THEY JUST ACCEPT ME FOR WHO I AM" is definitely a step backwards from this. Last I checked, goth is not about painting a bullseye on yourself.
Sorry if I sound harsh, but really - if you do want them to accept you for who you are, have respect for yourself and for them.

*If someone does have a generally negative opinion on goths, calmly explain what it is (as has been suggested) if they'll listen. Otherwise, they're probably not worth your time and effort.

*Most importantly, do not start treating "them" as a group of outsiders. If you already have (and chances are, considering your post), then that wall needs to be broken. I'm not suggesting that you try to make friends with everyone, but I am suggesting that you expand your social circle.

Firstly, why are you acting as if goth is some whole other branch of humanity with its own secret lingo and customs.

You just need to point out, its fashion, music and an interest in particularly aspects of life, such as Jocks with their Abercrombie, Justin Timberlake and Sports.

*shrugs*

Besides, why do you care what they think?

"Since Im a goth my classmates never understand me..."

That shows me part of the problem. That tells me that you've put up walls around yourself and as Resurrected Writer said, those walls need to be broken. We're not a different species and it sounds like you consider your self one or have deluded yourself into thinking that you might as well be because of the music you listen to and the clothes you wear. By putting up those walls and distancing yourself from "them", you've already set the stage perfectly for them not to understand you.

"...try to convince me to go back to the good side."

I sincerely hope that your classmates used the term "good side" and not yourself, for your own sake. You should have more respect for yourself if you did use that term to describe everything that isn't goth culture.... They'll respect you more if you respect yourself, have some goth pride! We're not evil you know! If someone gets the wrong idea of goth, calmly *that's the key* explain what goth is, as already stated, and if they don't listen, don't waste your time.

----
You have some good advice here from me and others, take it and use it, and I hope things go better for you from now on.

There will always be people who do not accept you for who you are. It's a fact of life for anyone who doesn't completely conform to the rigid social rules of accepted society.

A lot of people in my classes didn't have a clue what goth was when they kept asking me why do I dress in all black or shades of purple everyday. When I told them I was goth they didn't know what it was except for one who used to be a former goth and we both had to explain to them. A lot of them first said the whole stereotype thing but we had to clear that up for them. Some of them understood while others different. If they don't understand it's ok. As long as you tell them once, that is all that matters.

Lots of girls just need something to gossip about. A goth popping up is just what they want to talk about. Lots of people think that goths are all satanists or sanquins. Most of the time we're just people who like black, and lots of people have trouble understanding that. They talk about you and won't accept you because you're different, and teens think that everyone needs to conform. Just listen to the song "Minority" a couple times and you should feel a lot better.
