It's great that somebody else thought of Watari being under appreciated. After all, he's a great guy. Well, he's not really my favorite character, L is, but he's been taking care of him. And there are a lot of things he can do that an average person can't.

question It might have been interesting to actually see Watari escape and act as a messenger towards Mello and Near... then their gain of knowledge on Kira would have been a lot more and maybe Light would have been captured sooner.
But since Watari was Rem's first target, that plot twist was made impossible.
I personally don't like his or L's deaths, but they were necessary for the world to progress in Kira's direction to show readers how Light ruled it with such a tyranny.
It didn't leave Kira's world a 'what if'.
