Do you hate Near??

No. In fact, out of all L's potention successors, Near is my favorite. He deserved more time in the picture, I'd be interested in psychoanalzying him. He doesn't seem like a whole person to me, and I find that VERY interesting. What sort of past could he have had to leave him as just a ghost of a person?

And now that I'm done being philosophical, may I also present my personal opinion that Near is utterly adorable, needs lots of hugs, and inexplicably reminds me of a gerbil.

He's my third favorite character right now, behind Ryuk and L.

I know he's a complete rip-off from L, but out of the 3 successors, I love Near the most~ (but still he can never replace L)

First of all . . . I can not believe I actually read 11 pages of people ripping on Near. It makes me sad.

Second of all, I'd like to point out that there were two (I think) people that said that Near was Albino. Which he is not. He does have white hair, but his eyes are not red. See? http://anime-wallpapers.com/images/800x600/death-note-near.jpg

If you can't tell by now, I'll spell it out for you.
No, I do not hate Near. And yes, he is my favorite character.
Don't ask me why I would prefer him over L, I just . . . do.
DON'T GET ME WRONG, L IS STILL AN AMAZING CHARACTER!

Here. I'll give a couple reasons why I love Near.
Some of them will be stupid, yes.

1. I love his toys. Yes, that sounds wrong. But seriously, look at this.

3. His limited respect. By this, I mean that he doesn't just respect anyone.
He may not be real showy about it, but you can tell that he does respect those people by things that seem a bit startling coming from him. Like here.

4. His hair. Yes, a stupid reason but I love his hair and how he twirls it around his finger. . .

But perhaps what I like most about him is the fact that I feel like him and I are a lot alike. Perhaps the fact that his displays of emotion are hidden is what pulls me in. Or maybe, it's that he is completely different from me.
He is able to do something completely based on facts and not move until he is sure of something. Or maybe I just like him for unknown reasons.

No, he can not replace L. What I find to be funny is that people in this thread say this as though Near believes that he can surpass L. Even though, it's obvious that he doesn't believe that he alone can surpass L.
Heck, he's said it multiple times.

I don't see him as a "replacement" for L. While he may be called L, I will still always see him as N.
He's his own person, and I believe some people forget about the line that separates L and Near.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I think that what Near says is correct. When Mello and Near are separated, they can not surpass L. But together, they can stand next to L and even surpass him. Near has the part that is analytical while Mello has the part that is filled with emotion. L is the embodiment of both, but he must be balanced. Near and Mello are the two extremes of L but lack part of what makes L, L.

Mello is the one who approaches Kira, the part of L that takes risks in order to move forward.
Near is the one who stays in the background and watches as things unfold before him.

Near's lack of action, and Mello's brashness. Those are their weaknesses.
But hey, opposites attract. And become better then they were before.

Yea, lots of rambling without a lot of points. No one said you had to read to the end, though. ^_^
