Over the summer I'm going to Marching Band camp to join my new high school's marching band. (This is also going to be my first year in high school).
Any tips or ideas of what I (or anyone new to marching) might expect from marching band as well as stories from your marching experience? All will be greatly appreciated.

Oh god... Have fun hon ;D Expect perverted things and don't get offended.
Expect 9 hours of practice per day, and 5 hours of sleep per night, and pasta EVERY meal for an entire week! 8D
My first year of band camp was amazing >w< It gets really hot and I took a shower twice a day and always kept smelly spray stuff so I wouldn't smell all sweaty XD

XD Ahh yes...
Thing is, our school isn't having band camp this year DX We usually go to a college and have our camp but now we have to have it at the school... It really sucks... It won't be the same >_<

Well that sucks. My new high school usually goes to the same place every year, but they had to change it. Though more expensive than before the old place has higher prices this year (which are higher than the new place). But luckily I've never done this so no problem for me biggrin

^_^` I just finished my first year in band. So...let's see...from my experience.
Expect people to get angry at freshmen XD. Sophomores too, but more freshmen. Don't talk during drill. Make friends with some, you're going to be there for a while. biggrin Always think positive of what you're doing, and don't give up. Make sure you can stay in shape. Seniors have privelges. XD

Find a group of people you can REALY talk to. They don't need to be your age or in your section, just as long as you get along with them, because the worst thing is sitting alone. Aso, don't be afraid to approach your section leaders, drum majors, or the director, they're there to help you. Expect to run through the show so many times you're sick of it, and always remember, "one more time" NEVER means one more time.
Good luck and have lots of fun!!! biggrin

Oh and by the way... Don't talk back to the upperclassmen... I don't know what they call them over there but at my school they call them the 'Drill Masters'. They're the people that walk around when you're in line formations XD

Seniors have privelges. XD A lot of them were real nice to me and the other freshmen. I would never do that. I care too much about band. I got the low brass section, plus other freshmen. I hope I find others. I love this too much not to. I'll try. No they don't. AP even said, freshmen are full members and have the same privliges and responsibilities.

UGH! Just had my first Marching Band practice for next year. I never had to hold a baritone like that for so long. My arms hurt, I hope I get used to it. But it was fun. Met my section leader and the rest of us low brass types. Have 4 baritones, 3 tubas. We are awesome! Had a fight with dad about the form and money. It's taken care of though. It's just been very stressful. icon_stressed.gif
So I know what the show theme is this year. We are doing a Monopoly theme. Weird I know, but awesome. Took us 6 months to get the copyright from Hasbro. Can't wait to get the music and start practicing. Our section leader is going to send us our summer section practice sedchule soon I hope. We start around the 3rd week of July because a lot of us are doing too much stuff (like my Ireland and Canada trips). Can't wait to go to marching band camp in August.
So one of my best friends got two nicknames. Me and a tuba gave him Tweak (from south park) and some agreed, but more people liked Horseshack. I have no idea why, but that's what we're calling him. Speaking of nicknames, we have Fluffles in our section. I had the nickname Hornline from AP, but no one knows of it I think. A fellow baritone gave me the name Q-tip. I don't know why or care. As long as the name starts with a Q and isn't queer, I'll know it's me.
So it seems to be shaping up to be a good year. Can't wait to start marching.
