I guess the Yuri thing depends on the Yuri itself. I thought it was mostly for men, though, not that it really mattered to me. I hate it when I say I'm reading some shounen-ai and people call up to me and say, and I quote, "Are you reading that man-porn again?" I always get so mad at that, so I usually smack them. I read it ONCE and people can't tell the difference! I didn't really know it fell under shoujo, though. It makes sense, however.

Yuri is defiantly made for women by women, and not just for lesbians and bisexuals. You see, in 'normal' romances the female is always the submissive one, but in Yuri there is a woman who takes the, for lack of better words, 'leading role' in the relationship.
If you don't believe me, then you should check out the sister guild to this one, the Yuri/Shoujo Ai Guild and see how many of the members are women, and how few are males. wink

For-Chan Cookie Yaoi is not, I repeat, is not gay porn meant for men. Yaoi is a women's fantasy genre, that's why yaoi falls under the shoujo category. It's for girls! Yes boys, you can read it, but yaoi is a girls genre. If you're looking for actual gay male stuff, that's called Gei Comi or Bara. true

Well, yuri really blankets both yuri aimed at men and yuri aimed at women, unlike the term yaoi. Shoujo-ai however, almost exclusively targets girls and women.

Lady Gyrfalcon Aa, it's a little irritating sometimes when fans call a slash pairing yaoi. sweatdrop It seems a little odd to me, since it's not actually something of the genre... It's slash. yeah

Skizzors Fans: just because you support a fandom doesn't make them actually a couple. thx. Saying it jokingly is fine, but don't b***h out people who don't see it your way. MistressPaco "Girls liking Yaoi is the same things as boys liking Yuri!" Your thoughts? ..eh, mostly agree. There might be a different aesthetic to it, specific fans might have different reasons for liking it, but it's pretty much the same idea. =/ I agree. This is something I've repetitively stated in a lot of forums of whether it was weird or not for girls to like something like guy on guy stuff.

I hate mis-informed n00bs. Yaoi does not mean anything that's related to gay man love. Slash is not a canon pairing. Yaoi is not made for men. Know what the hell your talking about before you say anything.

Well, I am one of those that loves both slash and canon Yaoi pairings. Right now, I've falling completely in love with Scandal Kiss. But I agree, Slash does not go under Yaoi, if it did; then Harry Potter Slash could also be considered Yaoi, and I highly doubt there's anything Japanese about those books. confused
I also hate how people immediatley assume that I am a pervert when I mention that I like Yaoi.

I most certainly want to KILL all who think yaoi is none but gay porn.
scream
I can't stand people who speak so glibly about misconceptions. People really need to get their facts straight before opening their big fat stupid mouth! Or at LEAST read a bit of yaoi for starters. rolleyes

Hmmm...I have been wondering how/why Yaoi is used as the term describing boyxboy in anime/manga in America...I mean, doesn't the Japanese use the term BL instead?
And...it seems that I'm more laid back on what terms fans use than some of you guys...and no, I'm not a noob, I've been reading boyxboy for 7 years now, so whoever calls me one, I will smack you. I don't really care if a fanfiction author calls their work slash, yaoi, boyxboy, shonen-ai, etc., what's important to me is the content of the story, not it's label.
But...that's just my opinion, and I know that many of you will disagree with me. *shrugs*
Agree to disagree? sweatdrop

"Yaoi" is the general term for Shonen-ai and BL, though it's not a absolute description, it's easier to explain and most otaku can understand what you're talking about.
I'M NOT SAYING "Yaoi" MEANS SHONEN-AI.
