A few weeks ago a friend and I were cruising through a secluded (and expensive!) part of town, where minimal light pollution makes for great star-gazing.

We were headed home on this two-way residential road at about 2 a.m., barely grazing the speed limit, and we wound up driving behind a cop. No big deal, right? The guy pulled aside, let us pass, and then began to follow us. In a matter of seconds there went the red-and-blues, and we pulled over.

Here's the exchange:

Occifer: Evening, ladies. What were y'all out doing tonight?
Eva: Just taking a drive.
Occifer: Can I see your license and registration, please?
She obliges.
Occifer: Ma'am, is there any reason you're driving with your brights on tonight?
Eva: I'm sorry, my brights?
Occifer: Yes ma'am.
She checks to see if her high-beams are on, which they are not.
Eva: I thought *these* were my brights.
She actually turns her brights on to demonstrate that they were off, then turns them back off.
Occifer: [unintelligible mumbling about how hard it is to drive when someone's high-beams are in your rear-view]
Eva: I'm sorry.
Occifer: . . . Have you ever gotten a ticket before?
Eva: No.
Occifer: And you're how old?
Eva: Twenty.
Occifer: And you've never gotten a ticket before.
Eva: Yes.
Cop smiles mischievously.
Occifer: I'll go ahead and let you go this time. But be careful with those lights.
Eva: Yessir.

I've been lucky so far when it has come to me and the local law inforcement...I mean I have done some stupid things...such as going to and up on Monks Mound in Cahokia at 3am (park closes at dusk...) and they are none to fond of people doing thigns like that...there are some other thigns I have done but wont be listed here if you really want to know PM me some time...lol

Now my brother on the other hand is a different matter...I think he enjoys getting in trouble with the cops. O_o *sigh*

as for what not to say to them I wouldn't know. The few times I have had to deal with them they have either told me to go and get a hotel room or to stop comeing to Cahokia Mounds after dark...

Oh yea the police are so bad. They are so mean to us. Hell, they are there to protect us. Their jobs, suck. Racial profiling how about police profiling. They are always going after one race or another, right Well, how many cops are shot going into areas that are not very good. There are cops that do alot of wrong, but there are alot more who do alot of good. But hey let's not give them a chance. Racial profiling, yea right. When a cop does something wrong, everyone goes after them. But listen to the news "He was always such a good boy", right and he had a gun and shot a cop, Good kid.

There is wrong on both sides. For this kind of crap to stop, on both sides, we have to work together. Not apart. Instead thinking of only bad, try to see the good. There is good. Let us change this by working together not putting down the cops or another race.

You get this, we don't. OMG work for what you want. My father did, I do. Put your back into your job instead of just spitting out venom. Let's change by changing ourselves first.

Racism is absolutely unacceptable. Any police force that is associated with I will not accept.

I may be white, but I am well aware that racism is still a problem in this country. I won't be another white chick floating around thinking that all is well and fine.

I'm sorry, racist cops are wrong and shouldn't be allowed to have a position of power. Period, end of story.

You have no idea what race I am. For you to sprout out how bad racism is and then just say what you did is as bad as the police going after one person and then not the other.

Look deep into yourself, aren't the comments you just made as racist as how you feel the police are.

I am trying to say that we all need to work together to stop racism and sprouting out crap about racism don't stop it, it just keeps it going. Instead of all of us being so ignorant of each other we should try to understand each other.

Maybe I'm being harsh on cops. Perhaps there are good cops out there. But I think there are particular forces that need to be restructured.

There are some good forces out there. The city of Columbia in Missouri is one I'd probably commend because of their very low crime rates. Whereas the St. Louis police force needs to be held accountable. Saint Louis crime has gotten out of hand. When I was in an accident a couple of months ago several cop cars drove right past us and didn't stop to check on us. Luckily neither myself or the other woman was hurt, but police officers should still stop when they see that an accident has occured. Isn't part of being on patrol to protect and serve?

Maybe my complete dislike of cops is wrong. But I don't think my opinion that they need to shape up is wrong. Teachers, social workers, firefighters, etc all work hard and long hours sometimes for inadequate pay.

I am biased because my field is counseling and social work. We don't like to just shove people into prisons and call that a solution. Our job is to help people take charge of their lives and prevent crime by empowering people.

Yes, we need cops. But society functions mainly thanks to the good deeds of private citizens. Times when I've been hurt or in trouble it wasn't a police officer who came to the rescue. When I was five and involved in a car accident with my mom and baby brother it was a minister who pulled over and saved my brother from the wreckage. When my house burned down as a kid it was my eldest brother who saved us from the fire. The real heroes are the people who pull over when they see someone on the side of the road with the emergency flashers on. They're the people who take the time out to help a choking man or woman. They're the teachers who go the extra mile to believe in a kid who no one else believes in. They're the social workers who don't give up on their clients and help them function. The heroes are all around us.

I am sorry but I refuse to accept corruption in cops. If a cop is corrupt, racist, sexist, etc... I will dislike them. I will -not- simply respect them because they are an officer. Police officers, like all other human beings, must earn the respect.

And maybe you haven't ever been sexually harrassed by a cop. Maybe you haven't ever been pulled over solely for your age or your race. Maybe you've never had a cop drive on by and overlook a crime in progress. But you have to realize that there is corruption going on and some of us just aren't going to like cops because the only interraction we have had with them is negative.

I'll like cops when I finally meet a good one.

I feel bad for being so hard on cops. But I just haven't had many (if any) good experiences with them. I don't like power differentials. neutral

And I don't want anyone in the guild to think that if they're a cop I'm going to hate them.

All I'm asking is that people recognize that sometimes there are some seriously bad cops out there.

Sorry for being so harsh -puts away the soap box-

I agree that there are very bad cops out there, but just like it is wrong for the police to condemn on race, color creed, sex, etc. It is also wrong to condemn police for the bad ones. In your profession you should understand that.

I don't want anyone to think that I hate anyone. I don't love everyone either, but I accept differences in everyone.

Until we all work together these problems will continue. What have you done to help people and police come together? What have you done to bring your community together? Instead of directing all this hate, try to join a group to help your community. You live in a big enough city, there must be something. You maybe surprised to see just how much you can help instead of hate.

I am sorry, I didn't come to this thread or join this guild to cause any trouble, I just can't understand hate. I am sorry and if anyone feels that this discussion has caused problems, then I will leave this guild. Thanks for listening to my side too.

odd story for you all

I just got done checking in some one (I work at a hotel just so everyone knows) and the lady was obviously drunk. I didnt' think anything of it, I check her in and left a note for the person who comes in after me stating that when the officer comes in that night to have him check out the lady. She was just acting weird.

anyways, after I close down the pool, there are the cops.

Me: Can I help you?

Officer 1: Yes, do you know who owns that car out there?

Me: Yes, I just checked them in. I'll tell you know she was acting weird and I could smell the alcohol on her.

Officer 2: What room is she in?

Me: *gave out room number*

The officers go and check on her, I go and smoke a cig. They take her outside where I am at and start to talk to her. asking her if she had ever had any damage done to her car. "no" I had to leave at that point in time if only because I knew she was lying because I could see the large dent in the rear passenger door.

So I sit at my desk and watch them give the lady a field sobriety test and she failed. I watch them cuff her and take her away.

Officer 3: *holds up keys* Are these for her room?

Me: Yes...Is she coming back?

OFficer 3: IF she can post bond.

Me: Ohhh....

So I go back to my work closing down my shft and what not then Officer 2 comes back in.

Officer 2: Will you fill out this statement?

Me: sure....

needless to say it was a fairly entertaining night at work today...and I got 10 mins of overtime of it...lol

I understand your point of view healer.

I think though Police need to be held accountable to a code of ethics.

What bugs me is how little we screen on cops but yet how many loopholes therapists go through.

Therapists must: attend around 6-8 years of college between undergrad and either a masters or doctorate degree. Take the LPC exams or equivalent, abide by the code of ethics specific to their brance of therapy (i.e. ACA's code of ethics, APA's code, etc). And then there's supervision, supervision, supervision. At my level I'm looking at about 300 hours of supervision before I can get my license. sweatdrop

I think if someone has the power to arrest an individual they absolutely must abide by a code of ethics. biggrin

Now that's the truth. They are suppose to have a code of ethics. Perhaps some kind of classes for them. You know dealing with people and things like that.

Police aren't special or different then the rest of us. They have jobs to do too.
