How do you keep the original character IN character?
I wouldn't mind writing up something in fanfic for Anita Blake but I know that I'd ******** up the characters... how do you guys manage it?
I'm just curious. smile

I agree. All the people who have posted fanfic here have done a great job with keeping true to the characters. I don't think I would be able to do it. That is why I chose to do RPing with an original character because I don't think I would be able to do justice to the characters the way LKH writes them.

Writing anyone in character is hard, but it takes a lot of practice. I write a lot of fanfics on Fanfiction.Net and it takes a little while to tweek your writing until it sounds believable. I guess I pretend i am the character. I know, it sounds like a Mary-Sue, but it works. I just write the character would do. Become the character. (sounds corny, oh well)
I think that even if you think you'll mess up, you still need to try and post something, gets some feedback that WILL be helpful and then go from there. If you like, I will gladly beta for you and offer advice if you want it! PM me if you want!

*blinks* I don't know. None of you, besides the lovely Nai *huggles Nai*, has ever read my Anita Blake stuff. Backtrack, Lishi and Nai have. But for everything I write I'm told their in character.
I honestly don't know how you can do it. If you don't think you can write IC for a fandom, then don't. I love Yami no Matsuei, but can't write them IC, so I don't. I guess it's how well you relate to the characters you're using.
@_@ Sorry! Didn't mean to sound snotty @____@ I guess one way to think of it is.....if Jean-Claude and Anita were fighting over what was to be done next in a plan, Jean-Claude wouldn't lose his temper. Anita would. So....that did nothing. Sorry ;_;

I don't think there's any specific strategy to it. A lot of times I try to make scenes in my writing mimic scenes from the books, so that I have a good idea how a character is going to react. Also, writing right after reading one of the books is good. It gets you into the atmosphere of the Anitaverse, and makes it easier to keep the characters in character.
Honestly, I think its the hardest part about writing a fanfic, and I try to write mostly about characters I create, because I know how they'll react. sweatdrop

I agree with you that writing immediately after reading the books really helps. I was writing a story that was in no way related to the AB universe, but I had just re-read a bunch of the AB books and yblonski read the story and said that my writing was very LKH and I wasn't really trying for that, but I thought it was cool that I had picked up her style. My writing doesn't stay in her style, but it does tend to pick up her style when I have read her stuff and then immediately write.

As for your second part, I get what you're saying. But sometimes, having to keep LKH's characters in tact irritates me b/c I want them to act a certain way to something, but I know that they can't (like Richard wouldn't give Anita a hug if he saw her again). He can't do that b/c he's still pissed. Blah. (he was still pissed when I read Cerulean Sins at least)
