WebenBanu I find the reconstruction of the language to be fascinating! Unfortunately, in order to really understand the reasoning behind various linguists' reconstructions you need to not only be very familiar with whatever ancient Egyptian dialects you're working with- but also Greek, the various Coptic languages, and probably several other contemporary languages as well! It's frustrating, but at this point I don't even have enough familiarity to completely understand or evaluate an explanation of a reconstruction after it's been handed to me. One of these days I may start on some form of Coptic, but for now Middle Egyptian is presenting me with enough of a challenge to keep me occupied! Oh, btw- my friend who runs the GlyphStudy mailing list says that they will be starting a new round of students in February! If anyone is interested in seriously taking up this study, get yourself a copy of James P. Allen's Middle Egyptian Grammar (makes a great Christmas gift! wink ) and join the list to get ready! This is a group of fellow enthusiasts, not a college course- so you won't get a certificate, but there are no tuition fees, either! If you can keep up with your homework (which I think is fairly reasonable), it can give you a great introduction to the language. That is great!! I'm a bit stuck though because I am at college and the courses I'm currently doing are proving difficult, learning a language may put a strain on me. When I get my career up and running I will consider doing this, but at the mean time I'll carry on doing my light research about Egyptology and my A Levels.

I have a book that helps you practice writing hieroglyphics (it just does the letters and not ideas). It also had a stencil that I could use to write with but I lost it. crying

It only does the 'alphabet' but it's a good start to learning hieroglyphics.

Too bad there are so many different hieroglyphs for every sound in the language, argh!

I heard that there are over 3000 hieroglyphics! sweatdrop
I would assume that most of them are sounds (1/2/3-constanant sounds) then you have determinatives, words, verbs etc.
Sound are easy learn like the lion is a sound 'l' and the mouth is not only a 'r' sound but it also means 'mouth'. And most determinatives are easy to understand.

Haha! I have the stencils too. The stencils came in a book I brought in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is called Write like an Egyptian Though part of it is inaccurate because the Circle and the Cow's Belly symbols, they put them as "TH" sound. The stencils are nifty and comes in handy when youre tackling the real stuff (such as the lessons of Glyphs in the sticky thread and you can make corrections ^_^).

I couldn't draw lions at first when I started teaching myself hieroglyphics so my stencil always came in handy xd I got my note book and I was writing aload of stuff, replacing the letters with hieroglyphics ... my ex-boyfriends name was Michael and it has an 'L' in it ... sweatdrop and the words 'love' and 'live', lol.

I still cant draw lions >_<" but the stencils are sure a lot of fun when you see a nifty sentence in hieroglyphs online and use your stencils. Lets see if I got this clear. The supposively hieroglyph alphabet that we see..it is not really an alphabet but only a collection of sounds? and/or the the glyphs sound that are equivalent to the SOUND of our alphabet?

There are still a lot of sounds that are not in our alphabet, especially when they are made from the back of the throat.
