Brian Jacques says that he never puts gray area characters in his books. They're either good or evil. But what about Veil (Outcast) and Blaggut (Bellmaker)?

When does he say that?

It's on rewall.org in the "Ask Brian" section.

"No! The goodies are good and the baddies are BAD, no grey areas." Huh, you're right. He lied! x)

So is Veil evil or good? I, for one, would like to know...

But he also DID attempt murder in Redwall. I think that he is, indeed, a "grey" character. And actually, having to choose on or the other, I'd say he leaned evil. He felt more obligated to Bryony just because she had basically saved HIM on occasion.

That makes sense...

I also vaguely recall Veil's saying something to the effect that he didn't believe [insert-character-name-here] would actually kill him. For what that's worth.

Man, I am the worst Redwall fan ever.

Well, take this into account; Many of the "goodbeasts" he grew up with expected him to be evil, and treated him differently; Perhaps it is like a badger/otter deciding to kill all "vermin" because a handful massacred their families.
