There's many ways of writing them, it depends on the calligraphy of the person. If written with brush they look a bit different from the "normal" ones.

I've been learning Hiragana and Katakana at the same time - I actually find it easier to memorize them that way - instead of separately. ^^;
I know the Kanji for my nick-name, but that's it =D - Kanji comes last, after I have mastered the basics.
