Which song should I perform?
  Queen for the Queen!
Virtues of Vikings (hmm... maybe that's what I'll call it)

Ok, so here's the problem: I'm going to be fighting from 9am to 12pm this saturday. Groovy. Except that the bardic competition is at 12pm. To give me the absolute most time on the field, I'm going to go streight to the competition in armor. Their Majesties are both knights. They'll understand. As an added bonus I write a lot of songs about fighting.

I can't decide which of two songs to perform. They're actually my most recent offerings, and neither have ever been performed. Ever. By anyone. So I'd like to hear the opinions of other SCAdians.

The first option is the Queen filk posted by Squire to Fools few weeks ago.

The War Must Go On
Early mornings--armor from days of yore
Obsolete tech they don't use anymore
Here we are
They wonder why "those wierdos" wear such funny clothes
Another battle, another day to fight
Out on the erik, some don't strike with might
That was light!
I'm not gonna take it if it isn't good

Chorus:
The war must go on
The war must go on
Inside my armor's baking
The shield wall may be breaking
But my gaurd still stays up

Whatever happens I'll leave it all to chance
Another revive, another step to dance
Not again!
Does anybody know what we are holding for?
I guess I'm learning to take it all in stride
Every battle a fight with my own pride
No s**t there I was really--
But no one seems to hear me bragging yet again

[chorus]

Honor of old, it seems, at long last has come nigh
Fairy-tales of yesterday will grow but never die,
You know why my friends
The wars must go on
The wars must go on
When we're out on the field,
We're never gonna yeild
On with the war
Must get my fill
I love the kill
I have to find a foe who'll carry on
On with the war
The war must go on

Ok, this one's not a filk of anything. It just came to me out of nowhere on Tuesday(?).

[I'm not really sure what to call it, but I'm leaning toward either "Virtue" or "Valhalla when I die"]
I am the brave Viking warrior
With nine noble virtues comply
I drink and I trade and I sail and I sing
Valhalla when I die

Each man at my table is welcome
Take bread and take salt and draw nigh
Hospitality asks that I treat well my guests
Valhalla when I die

I never will shirk in a battle
At ready, my axe always high
With my bearskin cloak and my fierce battle-rage
Valhalla when I die

While I am truly a heathen
My honesty's never awry
I'll steal and I'll plunder, but never I'll fib
Valhalla when I die
(^my favorite verse)

I love you like a brother
And always I'll stand by your side
In battle, in peace, and the times in between
Valhalla when I die

Always my promise is honored
Though on some men you can't rely
My word you should know's iron-clad to my grave
Valhalla when I die

Always I am my own person
Codependence I ever deny
Like one mighty oak I stand strong on my own
Valhalla when I die

Constant is my perseverance
To yield--may my lifeblood run dry
If ever I'm able I'll complete a task
Valhalla when I die

A viking is surely industrious
Any means he has he will apply
Through creative thought he will get the job done
Valhalla when he dies!

Discipline only an Eastern trait?
Then never a viking you've tried
You'll find no more focus in all the known world
Valhalla when I die

I am so humble a Northman
With noble virtues I comply
I pray and I plow and I love and defend
Valhalla when I die

I gotta say, I like the second one better. The Queen one.... it's cleverly written and all, but, for a bardic competition in the middle of the day, and for the royals to boot? Myself, I'd try to keep things a bit more period, especially in a competition. Save the Queen song for the bardic circle, round the fire, at a more appropriate time.

Just my two pence, take it as you will. smile

The competition specifically welcomed filk work. I discovered I actually can't sing it though... I don't have the mid-range. Oh well.
