Grit.
Dirt.
Machines.
The stone walls clashed with the appearance of the students within, red, green, and orange hair spiked out in all directions.
And yet, in the midst of the the staid structure and the students coloured like Birds of Paradise, there stood one person.
The headmistress.

This is a steampunk set school.
Can you say uchronia?
What's uchronia?
Wikipedia defines it as "referring to a hypothetical time period of our world, in contrast to fictional lands or worlds. A concept similar to alternate history but different in the manner that uchronic times are not easily defined (mainly placed in some distant point near prehistory), reminiscent of a conworld.
The word is a portmanteau of the word utopia (Greek u-topos, not-land), replacing topos with chronos (time). It was originated by Charles Renouvier as the title of his 1876 novel Uchronie (L'Utopie dans l'histoire)."
So there you have it.
What's allowed?
Odd hair-colours, though these are due to dyes. Odd hair styles, though you'll need to go through a lot of glue to do it! Victorian-type clothing, BUT feel free to contact us if you'd like your girl character to wear trousers and your male character to wear a kilt. I (Dragostae) don't have a problem with it, but it couldn't hurt to ask. Research is amazing. You will be loved for doing your research. Mechanical wizardry. In other words, steampunk is all about spring or sprocket-driven mechanisms, and what could be created with them. Get creative! Class systems. I want all sorts of people attending this school. It is a public boarding school, which means that taxes cover tuition and what-not. The chances of all sorts of kids attending are high. Victorian-based. You will not be able to pull the wool over on me, boys and girls. My grandad's adoptive parents (my great-grandparents) raised him as a Victorian, so I know how people behaved, acted, and dressed. Don't say that's how Victorians acted. This is a alt-universe, so familiar things will be twisted about. Think Brit. I'd love a more Continental frame of mind. It'd be well worth it to stick with. After all, England gave us the Victorian age. Might as well play with that idea. What's not allowed?
Magic. Come on, people. Magic is EVERYWHERE on Gaia. Stand out! Pets. If your character has Fluffy or Fido, they'll have to stay home. Computers/iPods/etc. Okay. We're advanced in mechanics, but we don't have computers/televisions/etcetera. Think about this, here. razz At most we have adding machines that add by themselves, and ticker-tape machines, and anything you can think of that might fit in the setting.
