This was absolute s**t. Amaranth's travels brought her to what appeared to be a swamp, complete with disgusting smells and rot that kept getting jammed under her long, purple nails. This wasn't even remotely ideal, and she was beginning to get hungry. Surely there had to be something to eat here, but she couldn't imagine what.

xxxxA sharp, nagging caw broke the silence of the swamplands followed by a short growl and a loud snap. A caw returned in protest and suddenly the air returned to the eerie tones of the swamp. xxxxTrue pawed through the murky water, taking care to mostly keep her feet to the small 'islands' of land pushing through the water. Dead trees lined her path as she took a heavy breath of the swamp air. Rot, wet wood, moss and.. the musk of wet fur? Not sweet enough to be rabbit... she paused her steps, narrowing her eyes as she looked around her. She looked back to the crow perched upon her back, right wing hanging into her dense fur. "Almost-Food can fly, spy what I am smelling," she snickered, her teeth glinting in the sun, "no, useless Almost-Food, I do work you sit and preen. Pretty fool bird," she trailed off as she began to wander towards the new smell on her horizons. xxxxShe sniffed heartily as she moved through 'her' swamplands. The smell was closer to her home than she cared and she wanted to find out what was it was that smelled so compelling. She stepped closer to where the smell was emanating and stopped so abruptly her corvid companion was thrown forward on her back, causing him to cry out again. xxxx"What you doing in True swamp?"

The voice made her jump. She hadn't heard anyone approach. Slowly, her claws digging further into the muck, she turned towards the source. Amaranth didn't answer right away, instead choosing to observe for a moment. A female, similar build, with some sort of bird. Poor grammar, must not be very smart. "True swamp? True what? Truly horrendous? Truly the worst?" she sneered, her voice harsh. It was clear she was mocking the other female. She felt no need to hide it.

xxxxTrue sat in the mud facing the other female. She huffed and rolled her eyes in an exaggerated manner, "Can you hear this, Almost-Dinner. Stomps into True swamp and gives True the so-sweet words." she turned to her companion for a moment before turning back to the other wolf. In a very exaggerated manner True lifted a paw to her chest, "True," then pointing at the ground, "Swammppp," the word drew out for a moment to REALLY make sure the other wolf understood this time.

"Ah, so you're.... True. And you believe this is your swamp, correct?" Amaranth rolled her eyes, unamused by the other wolf. "And your bird compatriot there is... Almost-Dinner. What a nice introduction." She wasn't sure that this True would understand her sarcasm, but that wasn't her problem. "Where is your pack? Where have you settled?" She was probably being too bold, but she didn't care. Amaranth had goals she wanted to achieve sooner rather than later, after all.

xxxx"True settle here, in True swamp. What you doing tromping in True mud?" The tone of the other wolf either wasn't comprehended or was just ignored. "False. Almost-dinner, False," she wasn't sure why correcting the name of her bird was of such import to her but she couldn't help but feel irked when others called her pet dinner.
xxxxFalse hopped along True's back, eyeing Amaranth keenly.

Before she could respond, a ball of feathers that was nestled in her neck fur suddenly came to life. Fallen Star squinted, the light stinging her eyes. The raven fluffed up before hopping her way up onto her wolf companion's head. "True and False, then. Clever." Amaranth didn't feel the need to introduce her bird. Or herself, for that matter. "I'm passing through. Trust me, I don't want to be here any more than you want me to be." She quickly looked around, the feeling of disdain plain on her face.

"True can help. True grow in these swamp. True know these swamp. Prissy one may like path with less mud?" True approached the other cautiously, "Dinner easier to get with two also."
False eyed the raven on the other's back. "She carries a night sky on her back. Perhaps she's a more competent wolf than you," he croaked into True's neck. True huffed at the crow on her back, "True competence keep you alive, Wrong."
"We stop at True tree first." She turned, her tail swishing before the other's chest and started meandering towards her home, watching for the other.

A bit in shock from the assertiveness of the female, Amaranth found herself following her, as if a spell had taken hold. She chalked it up to pure curiosity, but Fallen Star couldn't help but lean over into Amaranth's ear. "I thought you would follow no one? Have you already given up, silly girl?"
Amaranth responded with a flick of the ear, shooing Fallen Star away. "I am only following so that I don't have to walk in this filth for longer than necessary. She's a tool for survival, nothing more."
The bird ruffled her feathers again, quietly settling back down in Amaranth's thick neck fur. It wasn't worth arguing, and it had been a while since she had been so near another bird. It was an unfortunate side effect of traveling with a wolf, she supposed. Perhaps while Am was being stupid, following this swamp wolf that seemed absolutely... untrustworthy, she'd get a chance to confer with someone of her species, for once.

True led the way to a giant hollowed and rotted tree that had submerged in the thick mud. Down into the wood she plodded as she made her way through her home. There were piles of bone and cloth scraps littered across the floor and mud seeping through cracks in the ancient tree bark that made up the walls.
She deftly stepped over a carcass and reached her neck into a pile of herbs and half dried, half rotting meat and came back out with a black mass in her maw. She flipped it onto the floor and pressed her head into it before she raised her neck to look back at Amaranth, her face now covered with a black and teal skull that matched her fur, "We go now. Ready Prissy one?"
She didn't wait for an answer before brushing past her new companion and heading back onto the raised ground and towards a patch of dried mud and dead grass. "Prissy one, what True call you? If no tell, True call you Prissy one for rest of journey."

The skull caught her off guard, but she supposed it shouldn't have really been a surprise. This tree home seemed to fit the swamp wolf perfectly, as off putting as it was to Amaranth.
"Silly girl, prissy one. She has you figured out." Fallen Star whispered into her ear teasingly. Amaranth didn't respond, choosing instead to flick the bird with her ear, throwing Fallen Star slightly off balance.
"You can call me by my name, I suppose. Amaranth. The parasite on my head is called Fallen Star," she responded, following True out. She wasn't sure why she was offering this information so readily, but it probably wouldn't matter in the long-run regardless. She'd be on her way out of here soon enough.

"Amaranth too long. Ama. True call you Ama." She left the patch of dirt for another a short hop away, "Come, Ama, follow True. True guide Ama through swamp safe," she smiled back at the wolf, a wayward canine jutting from her lips, "Where Ama headed, anyway?"
