User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The soft jingle of a bell at the door alerted her to other entering her shop. She looked up where she knew the door was and smiled. “Welcome to Words and Wisdom.” She heard two sets of steps on the wooden floors. One quickly moved past her. Perhaps they gave her a smile or nod, she clearly couldn’t tell having no sight to call her own. The second gave her a greeting which she appreciated.

User ImageGreetings. Apologies for my cousin’s standoffishness. I’m not certain he can even read to be honest with you.” In truth Cobalt wasn’t the least bit bothered by Crimson disappearing as soon as they entered the store. The further the distance from one another the happier they both were. Still they did walk and attend events together in public for the sake of their house’s honor. It was a foolish thing in his mind but he was going to be d**ned if he was going to fold before his cousin did. Looking at the shop keeper he was a bit surprised but was schooled enough to not give away his reaction. Not only was this a dragon unicorn but she was blind. A blind shopkeeper? It was an irony that was palpable.

“A pity he has found himself in a bookstore then, Still we have a number of picture books if needed.” She knew the joke for what it was and kept her voice pleasant enough to show she appreciated the humor. It was always better then the inevitable questions. There was a small rustle from the basket at her hooves. It would seem Aacutenieuml was shifting. He stopped soon though so he must not have fully woken up. There was a curious creek at the counter as she could hear the breathing of the stranger come closer to peer at what had made the noise.

A child in the book shop? Did the unicorn dragon not worry about noise or damage to her merchandise? “Your basket or are you foal sitting?” He of course was more being polite then anything else. He really didn’t care but still being polite was as much a part of him as his horn was. Foals were cute but messy and to be honest he wasn’t all that sure he was good with little ones. They seemed to like him alright but he always wanted to explain to them how things worked or why they shouldn’t do something he felt he might be a burdensome in that way as he remembered his own tutors doing that to him and him hating it as a child. He nodded to her claim over the foal. “Well I’m sure they will grow up with a love of books in a place like this. It looks quite nice. As a foal it took a while before I found my love of books with magic training. Perhaps they will as well.”

Well this was interesting. Unlikely to be a parent but someone who knew a number of kids perhaps? They seemed to be trying to give her hope. It was unneeded as it didn’t matter what interests Aacutenieuml had she would support him. That was simply what she had decided so long ago when she had been blessed with the sweet child. She was certain that the child would be amazing as he was her and Minos’s child. While Minos was gone she was still her and she would love their child enough for both of them. “Thank you. I will keep that in mind. Was there a book that you were looking for specifically? While I love to talk about my sweet Aacutenieuml I am sure you have other things you would rather do as we are in a place full of wisdom if you only take the time to look beyond the covers.”

“Well I’m certain I’ll be in and out quite a lot while here with my cousin so perhaps I’ll hear about your little one in time. In the present though I am looking for books on magic. Defending and buffering able.” He wasn’t sure what to expect next to be honest. He just assumed she would tell him the general location in the shop but to his surprise she stepped out from behind the counter after listening for something based on how she swiveled her ears. Following he noticed she had no trouble and didn’t bump into things. He noticed a few small stones floating around her. Ahhh… so that was her trick. She used stones to avoid bumping into things. Clever. Still how that would work with a child about would be hard he supposed. He hoped there was another in the picture to help her. He trotted past a stack where his cousin was reading something. He noticed it looked like a cook book but he couldn’t be sure. He didn’t linger on it as the shop keep turned and then stopped looking up.

The second shelf and third self from the top are what you want. There is a ladder that way.” She turned and ‘looked’ further down the book rows. She knew it was there as she had put it there this morning. She was going to need to hire help when the next shipment of books came to put them away. It was hard to do when she had get help to read the titles to her. perhaps working in a library would have been better but she loved her shop. “Please take your time and I hope you find what you need.” With that she moved away from the patron and to his cousin who was in the cooking section.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Approaching the food section she stopped and stood for a bit. She heard the turning of pages. “If that book doesn’t have what you are looking for perhaps I can help direct you to another book?” She heard some fumbling and the heavy conk of a book against another. She had not meant to startle the other pony. “Apologies I did not mean to cause you any grief.”

User ImageCrimson chuckled at his own surprise. He had been so engrossed in the recipes in the book he had managed to lose track of his surroundings. His old training instructor would have beaten some sense into him for that. How could one who was defend, be so careless? “That’s alright it was much my own fault for finding the books so interesting. I would appreciate your help. I am looking for foreign cooking. I am also looking for dessert recipes. Any decent ideas?” He watched as she tilted her head and realized the pony before him was blind. Well that had to make sales hard. He glanced back to the books to figure out what kind of meal Aki would like cooked when the teal pony’s voice chimed in again.

““Third shelf down behind you is desserts and to your left is foreign foods. If you need anything else please let me know.” Smiling she headed back to the front desk as she heard him call a thank you up to her as she walked. Moving back to the front counter she could hear her lovely child climbing out of his basket again. It wouldn’t be long until he would outgrow it. Smiling she leaned down and nuzzled him. ““Aacutenieuml there is a picture book next to you if you want to look at it.” She listened as he thumbed around with the picture book near her. She heard yet another page tear and winced slightly. He was at that young destructive age but she hoped he would learn to cherish books later. In his basket there was a small reindeer plush that had been given to him by a pony she knew. Thankfully that seemed intact still. A part of her was a bit sad she could not see how her little one was growing up. Shaking her head or him this was perhaps one of the first times she really wished she could see. Very long time so she could watch him grow up one day at a time. She knew he would be fine and wonderful adult justice his father was a display with the rumors were around time. Nor did that stop the small hanging heart with the very idea that it didn't matter how he grew up she would never be able to see it. Of course they able to hear him and know was how he well did help add a balm around her mind. The clatter of homes on the wooden floors over heard that one of her patrons was coming forward from the back of the shop. When he spoke asking her the price of a book she realized it was the one who was looking for the food before. Quoting him the price she heard coins being placed on the countertop. Tapping the coins on the counter with her hooves, she confirmed the payment was correct and finished the sale. ““Have a good day.” She could hear the other coming up as well but it seemed he didn’t find what he was looking for on this shopping trip as she heard a huff and he left quickly. Perhaps he would be back another day. She was bound to get more stock in sometime soon and looked forward to being able to widen her selection. “"Please come back any time."

“Oh don't worry I think I'll only be back your food selection was quite interesting. My apologies for my cousin he tends to give it hesitance around ghoulies and your little one there is cute as they are might have unnerved him a bit. Again my apologies for his rude behavior I'll see if I can straighten him out before his next visit back.” The attitude of Cobalt as he had looked at that young child was enough to have made Crimson frown. He found that old prejudice distasteful in his mind although to be fair his heart was also affected by ghoulie but a matter of love rather than loathing. Still the child seemed happy and healthy which means mind when looking at as his cousin had enough sense to leave rather then start an issue. The child was looking over the book and turning pages some of them having ripped in the process. “I have to say though he seems to be enjoying that book quite well although I fear the book will be worse for the wear when he's done with it.”

She laughed thinking about it “Oh I’m certain he’s enjoying it quite well it will be the third book he's decided to redecorate the shop with in the last four weeks. Of course the advantage to being the bookstore owners that I can buy in bulk so with less of an issue right now.” she heard him laugh about it was a very pleasant sound considering what she had just found out about the other pony. Well his cousin seem to have manners at first and then went out in a huff when he found something that displeased him the one before her seemed to be reasonable even though he had seemed in a rush before. Such different types of ponies. The world was a vast place. “I look forward to seeing you back in the shop and I'll make sure that I stock good food recipe books for you.” She heard him say he looked forward to it and heard him leave. Taking a small breath she moved next to child and nuzzled him again making him groan and complain a bit about her jostling him. If anyone tried to hurt her baby she would end them. While the food cousin was welcome back any time the magic seeker would take a while to get back into her good graces.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.User ImageTime passed in the shop. The unicorn found she might need to hire some help as it was getting harder to keep up with demand as well as restocking and keeping of course the shop clean while she had a little one running around terrorizing the place. Annie had knocked over the entire stack of books by trying to jump from the counter onto the stack that had just come in from shipments gotten in of course causing them and him to cascade all over the floor. In the middle of the mess there was her horrible, adorable little troublemaker; he was clinging close to her and he was crying because somehow gotten a scratch on his leg during the entire incident and she was trying to soothe him when she heard about the chime of the bell alerting her the customer had arrived. “Welcome words and wisdom as you can see there's been little incident please give me just a moment while I get everything cleaned up and I'll be with you momentarily.” Scooping up her him up she whisked him behind the counter where she kept a small tin full of medical supplies or occasions just like this one. She heard a very deep gravelly voice or ply that was all right and she should take her time. Thinking back on the boy she recognized him it then several times before purchasing medical books a rather shy pony although taller than her from the sound of his voice. Grateful to the customer for understanding the joys of motherhood she went to work on any best you could cheer the customer standing outside breathing then he proceeded to offer assistance saying he had some medical knowledge slightly tend toward him she heard open up the small jar of antibiotic and heard any sniffling was applied she then heard the telltale tear that told her he was opening up the bandage. Interestingly enough and he wasn't fussing while he was receiving treatment which she thought was a first all things considered her little one didn't tend to like many others besides herself perhaps this was a good thing. Keeping any are open on them she hastened to clean up the books so that her patron could go about their business it took no time at all and her little one was all set to go grateful she thanked her patron and heard them scurry off for the back of the shop without a response. It was nice even with chaos going on some ponies were quite predicable. She couldn’t quite remember his name though the pony had introduced himself once or twice. Finishing stacking up the fallen books she checked on Annie then moved the books over to the scanner that read the book title aloud. Once that was done she started to put them away in the shop while keeping an ear open to Annie. He was feeling his wild side today as she heard him take off to the back of the shop toward the child section. He was likely going to be making another ‘fort’ from books and the cushions she had placed back there recently. She was going to have to have him someone to play with soon as while there were a number of small ones around it didn’t change the fact that book shop wasn’t exactly were one would think to bring a child. She had made a children's section but that was just a start. Hearing something else fall from the children's section she sighed. Motherhood was not always easy but thankfully it was a slow day and the patron here was a nice enough if quite regular.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Dea had gone to the spring festival with Annie and it had certainly been something. On her way out she had meet a teal pony who was packed and saying she was going on a vacation for a time. Dea nodded her head understanding with the arrival of the changelings and the whole supposed abduction and all of that. Dea had offered her home to the teal pony to stay at to help save on costs given the fact the pony sounded rather worn out. A factor in her decision was that on the trip back Annie had climbed from his basket yet again and the pony was instantly giving Dea small updates on her son and sounded fond enough of Annie that Dea found her presence unobtrusive.
User Image
Some time had gone by since then and Teal Tale had found herself helping stock shelves and do smaller tasks in the store. It was much easier with someone else in the store rather than relying on her bar code voice reader to scan items and then tell Dea what book the customer wanted. She was especially glad on days like the other day were it was busy and she had several customers all wanting things at once. Teal Tale didn’t quite understand how to order books in but she did well enough managing things in the shop once the books were in. Her ear tilted as she heard the smaller hooves of the other pony back in the children’s section setting up a sign that Dea had commissioned recently. It was a large book with foals running into the stories they were reading. Teal Tale had told it was ‘breathtaking’ and she decided to trust the other pony on it. Stretching her legs she headed back that way to see if she could help as the front was slower today since many of the mom’s with young foals in sports had the kids outside training rather than being in and reading books.

“Anything I can do to help?” She heard a clatter and lots of small objects rolling. “I will take that as a no?” she was almost scared to askew at it was that fell. She heard Teal Tale curse under her breath. “I think I have a magnet under the counter next to the band aid tin.” She could hear Teal Tale head off that way. Shifting herself slightly she used her hooves to gather up some of the nails that had fallen. While she could check with magic it was harder to find things when she didn’t know what had fallen and Teal Tale didn’t often use magic except when things were over her head. Keeping an ear out for customers it didn’t take long for Teal Tale to come back. There were a series of small things that were soft while the magnet did it’s work. In short order she and Teal had gathered everything up. Teal got things set up and then had Dae hold the sign up while she hammered things into place. Latter she would be calling her sister and giving her updates quite often. Dea was glad she had hired someone who was so close to her family. Not only that but Teal Tale had told her of a plan to visit some farmers from Drizzle Town and get some shipment of fruit given how fond she was of it. Dea didn’t understand but it was something Teal liked to talk about so Dea let her do so. She wondered how long Teal Tale would be around. It might be nice to have help on a permanent basis. She couldn’t really offer a lot in terms of payment but it was enough to live on. “Teal if you have a moment I have a question for you. I know you have been here for a week. I don’t know how long a vacation you were planning on but I was thinking it would be nice to have a set of eyes around the shop for things. Any chance I could keep you for the summer at least? I can’t pay a lot but I am also willing to keep the spare room open for you to help save and cut costs.”

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. User ImageThe gentle chime alerted Dea to the patron. Smiling in their direction she gave the usual greeting. “Hello and welcome to Words and Wisdom.” She heard a very small mumbled response. There was a small buzzing noise which Dea could just barely hear. Passing it off as a bug wandering in her shop she moved back to checking the inventory list. She clicked down on the deceive and it read off the numbers of the new stock she had just gotten in. She had ordered more game books lately as that seemed to be getting popular. With spring here she would have to start stocking more ‘Do it Yourself books’ as well as it seemed this was the time of year others got all ready to go on things but then would give up halfway there. Perhaps it had to do with the heat of the summer. Other ponies’ tended to be crankier as well. She tried hard to remember it might just be the season or they might be having a bad day. Holding one bad day against someone was not something she would like so she tried to avoid doing it to others. The patron today seemed to be lulling around the front as though they didn’t want to venture in further. That was odd. “Is there something special I can help you with?” She scanned the next book and the device read the title to here. My Husband was a Changeling! That one was popular lately as was 10 facts about changelings. She could hear the patron jump when the title was spit out by the machine. It took no time at all for her to hear the patron fleeing her shop. Would they be back? What was their issue with Changelings. Dea didn’t know much about the changelings but from what she knew from Teal Tale the whole spring festival was a mess more then what she had been able to hear. For much of the festival her son had been in his basket and she had been listening to the going on’s of the unfurling events around her but didn’t care for them. She had never ‘seen’ the changelings but they must seem different for others to have such a reaction as they had but it had ended well enough she though. Changelings were not prosecuted and in fact could be more open now. Some she supposed were still sensitive to the matter. Whether this patron was a changeling or one whose life had turned and changed by one. She hoped one day they could come back so she could talk to them about it.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The door chimed and Dea heard a number of steps on the floor. It seemed she had two guests today. Teal was out picking up lunch for them so Dea was in the shop alone. “Hello and welcome to Words and Wisdom.”What a lovely shop name and a nice proper greeting!” Dea heard a giggle above her and tilted her head up with a smile. “Thank you very much. if there is something I can help you with please let me know.” “any tech books? “Magic lore and technology in the back by the chairs. “Thanks.” Dea heard claw marks on the floor as the ghoulie headed back toward the section in question. “is there something I can help you find?” her other guest was quite for a moment but then spoke again. “Nothing in particular. Would you like for me to read to you?” An odd question. “If you are so inclined I have no issue with it. If there are foals back in the children’s section feel free to start a story time. My assistant Teal Tale has done so several times.” Even if a patron was strange they were still a patron though Dea couldn’t quite figure out why the other was laughing. “Reading to the little ones. Oh I like this place. I think I’ll be stopping by a few times to do just that. Have any lore on alicorns?“Yes lore is back by magic and technology back by the chairs. Please follow me.” She used her magic to pick up some pebbles and used them as her guide pebbles as she often did even though she didn’t really need them at this point. Taking her patron past the other shelves she could hear pages flipping while the other patron in the back was flipping through pages and placing books back having not found what she was after yet. “here we are” She gestured to the shelf. “Hopefully what you are after.” With that she returned to the front desk. Teal Tale came back a short time later. User Image

User Image“Thank you.” Sliding the lunch box toward herself her ear flicked to the back. “We have two patrons browsing at the moment.” She heard a crunch as Teal started in on her meal. Deciding to save it for latter she moved back to the back room to put her lunch in the fridge until she felt hungry. In the short time it took for her to put her lunch away something incredible must have happened as Teal poked her as soon as she stepped out. “What happened now?” You do know that is an alicorn in the back reading right?”That’s nice.” Honestly what a pony looked like didn’t matter as she couldn’t see them anyway. It was more important how they acted and of course if they paid with the exception of the desperate she had met a few times and had given a few free books out. She could hear a few strangled noises as she moved back to the front counter to sit and wait. “Just making sure.” That was something she liked about Teal. There wasn’t too much that got the little unicorn worked up and when there was a reaction it was never screaming or running.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.User ImageThe twilight hours of the store were coming very slow ticking one moment after the next. Dea yawned and her ear flicked back. She could just make out the voice of the story teller back in the children’s section reading a story to a foal. The mother had brought him in while picking up an order she had placed that had finally come in. There were a few others mesmerized by the story and Dea had to admit she loved listening as well. She could smell and hear the sounds of the story being told and even feel the surrounding if she stopped to listen. There were places she could see in her mind when she story as well. But it was only in her mind’s eye. She had been told the alicorn could make others see the story play out before them but as she was blind she could see it in her mind but it wasn’t the same as actually seeing it. It could have easily just have been her own imagination rather than some alicorn’s powers. Hearing hooves coming forward she smiled in their direction. “Hello. Anything I can help you with?” “Not really. Elenelea is enjoying the story and when it ends we will be headed out. I am just sorry I couldn’t bring little Dome with me. She wanted to sleep in rather than shop as classes were quite long for her today. Elenelea was feeling rather chipper with the night coming on so I figured we could do some light shopping before all the stores close. Since when did you get a story teller?” “Ah no the Alicorn isn’t a staff member they just come in and enjoy reading. I was told they do book preservation and copying for a lot of museums but since this is a book store there isn’t too much call for book preservation in the shop.” “Well that’s nice still. To even have someone come in an read it’s nice.” “Very much so. I rather enjoy it. Also were there any other books you wanted me to keep an eye on?” “mmm..” She heard the rustling of books from the edge of the counter. “Nope I have quite a few now on rising little ones like things to look out for with dragon babies.” Dea smiled thinking back to when her sweet boy was smaller. “Yes I remember when Aacutenieuml was smaller. There were many new little claw marks to be found.” The two shared a small laugh. Children had a small way of completely changing how one viewed the world. “Thank you for the other day. Elenelea had wanted to go out and play but the sunlight made him a bit weaker as he is much more fragile. Letting him play in your shop in the back until I could pick him up was a big help.” “Not a problem at all. I’m just glad he wandered in here, rather than somewhere he could have ended up in trouble.” “Very true.” The noise from several sets of hooves coming forward told Dea that story had ended and the speed of a gallop down the hall indicated the little one was one the way forward. “Elenelea calm down.” “oh sorry mom..” She heard some scuffles. “Have a good night.” "You as well."User Image

Dea took time to sweep the shop when everyone else had gone for the night. Teal was counting the till for her after having looked over the shelves to see if any books had ended up misshelved. it had been a larger problem before Teal had come as the books had often been mishelved and as Dea could not see she couldn't tell if they were out of place and Annie had never held all that much interest in sorting out the books like Dea and Teal did. The fact Annie was gone still weighed on her heart. Perhaps she should try dating again? The prospect of having to explain why she was blind and still wanted to run a bookshop though was rather vexing. Taking a deep breath she reflected perhaps she mull it over while having tea. She didn't feel as brave as when she was younger and adventuring. Was this what it was like to feel old? She didn't like it one bit. Deciding tomorrow she was going to have shop closed or let Teal run it she was going to have a spa day...

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. She slid two basket of bits across to the artist who had made the image over the foal section. He had come in to touch it up for her as Teal had pointed out the other day that there were several gouges in it where a foal had gotten a littler overzealous and had climbed on shelf then had tried to climb into the sign. It was cute but dangerous. Thankfully no pony had gotten hurt. She knew that Lock never charged much but she wanted to make sure they at least got a meal for their work. She had told them she was paying a bit more to fix the scratch as it was a ‘sudden and rush’ job. In truth if the sign was scratched wouldn’t have bothered Dea at all as she couldn’t see it but she did like her shop to look nice for those who came to buy books. “Thank you for your hard work.” She smiled in the general direction of the bits being picked up. “Anytime.” She heard the door close as Lock left. She was glad they could come in so late to fix the sign. She trotted back to the and sat down on the chairs in the back. She could smell the tang of paint. The shop was closed and it was very quite right now. It had been a very long day. The shop had been cleaned up and was mostly dark. Having no sight she didn’t worry about moving about in the dark. Closing her eyes for a short time she wasn’t really sure when she drifted off to sleep but it was very quickly she would have guessed. User Image

User ImageShe didn’t hear the ring of the bell or the hooves and claws on the floors. She didn’t notice the first time her name was called but she did wake when she was roused gently. For a split second she tensed not sure where she was until she heard Teal Tale’s voice. “If you were tired I could have waited for the sign repair. It’s foolish to sleep in your shop when your home is within trotting distance.” She heard the little unicorn huff and move around while another voice surprised her. “I hate to say I agree with the mini authoritarian but I do in this case mother. You should rest more at home” Annie! Surprise must have shown on her face as she heard him chuckle. She gave him a tight hug. “it is good to hear you. When did you get back? Have you been safe?” Teal interrupted. “Dinner is at home. He was there waiting when I got back from the shop and you were going to be right behind. Food is waiting.” The little unicorn ushered them out the door and back to Dea’s home. Dea was smiling glad that her son was taking the time to visit. She was tired today though so she hoped he was going to stay for a day or two. It seemed like he was always coming and going. He had told her before he was traveling around the winter lands which she thought would be hard as it seemed he was always a summer child. User Image
