What is their personality like?
Lana was once a happy and sarcastic girl, who genuinely cared about her family and keeping her secret for everyone. However, since the events of her childhood she has become volatile and angry. She is distrusting and unwilling to listen to what anyone has to say. She will let herself explode uncontrollably upon approach, slinging everything she has at anyone who comes too close to her -- which is quite strong considering how hard she was pushed to reach the limits of her powers. For all of her work trying to control it as a teenager, she now has no sense of whether she is using just a little or a lot. She lets her emotions run her power, because she doesn't know how else to keep herself safe. She has been thrust into a blind survival mode, and is in serious need of rehabilitation, but no one can get close enough to begin the process.
What is their backstory?
Lana is Joel's younger sister. They grew up fairly close to one another, and Joel would often help her try and practice controlling her powers. It resulted in many trips to the emergency room for her brother, and people began to get suspicious about what could be going on in their household. The entire family had sworn themselves to secrecy about Lana's abilities, and she knew that it was a serious matter. The girl genuinely cared that she would not get caught, and so that was why she had to practice. She needed to learn to control it so that she could more easily hide it.
Despite all of their precautions, when Lana was fifteen, a Hunter found them. In the middle of the night, Lana crept down the stairs as both of her parents were shot down by the man. Her brother, trying to protect her, was also shot, but the Hunter panicked and ran. Lana raced to her brother's side, but he was unconscious and so she simply sat with him and cried until the ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital. She, however, did not stick around to find out what would become of her. All of this was her fault. Her family was dead because someone was looking for her, and her brother was hurt because he had tried to protect her and keep her secret. Lana packed a bag of things, and she ran. She walked for the rest of the night, only to run into a face that she was terrified to say was familiar. It was the deviant hunter that had shot down her family. She tried to fight back, but the Hunters had ways of keeping themselves from being hurt by deviants, and he had clearly been prepared for the electricity she could harness.
She spent the next few days locked in a box while the hunter tried to figure out what to do with her. He ended up selling her to a group of scientists who tested on deviants, and this was far worse than anything Lana could have imagined. If she had known this was where she would end up, she never would have run away.
When they found out that she could control electricity, they locked her in a crude room with stone walls to prevent her from shorting out their equipment. They ran test after test, and Lana often saw other deviants tortured to death. They pushed the deviants to their very limits, to see how far their abilities would take them, and if they didn't do as they were told there were harsh punishments. She saw people electrocuted, she saw bones broken... Lana's own punishment involved being dunked in a tank of water. Anything that might hurt the deviant in question. In her first few months, she tried everything to get back at them. She would electrocute scientists when they opened her door, or when they seemed least suspecting. The punishments would become worse and more frequent, however, and it soon became clear that there was no way to escape. They were seemingly prepared for everything. Lana began to lose all hope of getting out. For a while she even thought that Joel might return to help her, but she knew it was silly. He wouldn't even know where she was, since she had run away without a word, or if he had even survived his wounds.
However, while most deviants that arrived here became more docile in their hopelessness, Lana became more volatile. Her strength was the only thing that kept her from succumbing to death over the years, and also the only thing that kept them from getting rid of her. They needed to see how far they could push her before she would break. Lana broke mentally far sooner than she broke physically. For a time, they had to stop interacting with her altogether, because she became too violent. When they returned, rather than testing how far they could push her powers, they began a new line of testing on how to neutralize them. This was arguably just as painful, and it took a while before they made some headway with the project, as Lana would simply short out anything they brought to try and use.
The project was near completion, having successfully subdued Lana's powers for longer and longer periods each time it was tested. Before they could fit her with the final product, however, the compound was attacked. Lana didn't know by who, and she didn't particularly care. She would not go with anyone else. They freed her, and tried to explain that they were there to help, but she refused to listen, flinging electricity wildly at anyone who approached her. They were able to get close enough to knock her out, and when she awoke she was in yet another cell, though this one was set up far more comfortably than the last. She had a bed, at least.
A handful of people were sent to talk to her and try to explain that she was no longer in danger, but she attacked each of them. She was beyond hearing them. Lana trusted no one, and she was sure if she opened herself up there would only be more of the same. Eventually, they stopped trying, figuring that a break might do her good. She has now been in the Providence psych ward for around six months, with little to no change in her volatile behavior.
