keshwyn Juni's smile was crooked. "True. And there are sounds in some languages I cannot even, even perceive much less reproduce. But I have, have resigned myself to just missing my 'rrrr' in classes for the next few years. It is not that, that my name cannot be said in Japanese, just...not quite right." She dipped a piece of daikon into the hot sauce and popped it in her mouth, then blew air in the air, miming dragon breath, before looking back down. "It is...hm. We can - we have taught it to, to get a few strong emotions. It will handle, um, disgust, surprise, and happy-smiling, though the, the last one gets confused with, with aggression sometimes. But the, the subtle ones we are still working on. It will, will be a learning process of course, but we were prototyping on, on the big expressions that people - that most people -" and she nodded briefly to Kyouya in appreciation of his poker-face, "will show without restraint." Kyouya considered this while acquiring a second (smaller) arepa, that aforementioned poker-face showing a quiet flash of appreciation of the unspoken compliment. "That might be good enough," he said thoughtfully, doctoring the arepa with crema and hot sauce as previously. "Let me explain?" He took a bite and chewed, giving himself a chance to arrange his thoughts. "It strikes me that you could use this sort of analysis on crowds, as a means of determining overall comfort, discomfort, or confusion. It could be used to find areas that need improvement in traffic patterns or service, if there seems to be a persistent pattern of unhappiness or stress, ne?" For anyone else, this particular expression in their eyes might be considered mild interest. For reserved Kyouya, that level of intensity was a well-controlled understatement. He had in his hands so much potential here ...

Juni put down her chopsticks, tilting her head back to look up at the sky as she considered Kyouya's proposal. She sat silent for what could have been a long time - or just a commercial break with an eyecatch in it. At last she looked back down at Kyouya. "I do not think the, the software is there yet. We have been, ah, optimizing for a web camera, of, of the sort most laptops have, and thus most people. To pick faces out in, in a crowd is not there. But it is a thought," she agreed. "And, and certainly one I will tell my collaborators. We might - perhaps - be able to work on it over, over summer term." Her smile had an eyebrow quirk to it. "Did you, ah, have a venue in mind? As a place to, to test, you understand."

Kyouya mulled the question over briefly -- but only briefly, as he too set down his chopsticks to focus. The sharpness in those dark eyes intensified as he came up with the answer. "We have a string of pharmacies that would be a perfect start. Some of them do better than others, and it may have to do with layout or with service. We can use the ones that are performing well as a control, ne?" This was a perfect opportunity for him -- a subtle out-maneuvering of his brothers on the customer service front, as well as providing new opportunities to both his family, and to Miss Juni. He mentally reviewed his personal budget to see if he'd have enough to pay for the test cases, before it went up to his father for serious review. He thought so. "It is a lot of work; I can front your group a partial payment in advance for the additional functionality, if you'd like."

Juni nodded slowly, thinking this over. "I will, will mention it to, to my co-hackers," she said at last. "I think we want to, to focus on the prototype for, for the summer festival. To have something to, to show for our term. But if they are, are amenable, we can try it. We will need to, to discuss hardware when we get there. Our test cameras do not have the, the focal range for what you propose. You are thinking something like, like a security camera, yes?" She was thinking over the angles, considering what she could do with a shot of the face that was not full on, or was obscured by hair. Hmmmm...it would be an interesting challenge. And probably more practical than the video game, although... "I should, should warn you, the game is...is our passion? It is for love, not for money. The application you suggest, it is a good one. But it is not where, where the drive lies now? We can do it, I think, but it won't be a, a priority yet." She smiled abruptly, realizing what Kyouya's offer meant. "But when we need to, to bankroll the game, though - then it will be sure to become one."

"Right. I wouldn't expect it to be a priority at the moment. You have your own work to finish first. And yes, security cameras are what I'd been thinking; they're already installed, and it should be simple enough to either redirect the feed, or search through old data, ne?" It was better than a flat refusal; Kyouya would take it as it stood. "What do you expect people to be able to do with the prototype? Or should I stop by your booth to see?" he asked, with a quirk of that sly smile. He took one last bite of the pickled radish, letting it linger briefly on his palate to cool some of the remaining burn. It had, in his opinion, been quite a satisfactory lunch, on many fronts.

Juni nodded thoughtfully, finished the last of the second arepa, and licked her fingers. "If you send me, ah, some of the footage - a selection so that, that I can see what sort of, of obstacles I would need the, the computer to avoid noticing, it would help. It would not hurt to, to teach the software what to ignore for the game, too." And with that settled, she turned back to thinking about the upcoming deadline. A crooked, and distinctly rueful smile flashed across her face. "Well, if it goes well, there should be, be a false human to, to interact with. If it, it goes badly, there will be a lot of, of debugging text and many embarrassed computer programmers." She chuckled cheerfully. "And then, then there will be much of consoling ourselves with, with chocolate cake and sweet bean buns and so on." After a pause, she added with slightly painful honesty, "I do not know which it will be yet, but I hope it is that the cake is a lie." She considered the bottle of hot sauce which the two of them had made a sizable dent in, then glanced up at the clock tower, which was perhaps five minutes off of chiming for the end of lunch. "But that is, is neither here nor now. I shall leave half of this in, in the Host Club for you, Kyouya-san, yes?"

Kyouya reached for his notebook, and wrote himself a reminder to contact one of the pharmacies for an appropriate piece of sample footage. While he could just pull something from one of the host club's cameras, he found himself loathe to do so. It was better if people didn't remember those existed -- and besides, the results from one of the pharmacies could theoretically be put to use immediately. Long-term, he would be looking to apply this to the Ootori resorts -- there was the real test -- but small-scale was a good place to start. "I'll get it to you as soon as I can. Probably within the week," he promised. "I suppose if it goes well, there still might be a lot of debugging text -- just at an earlier stage," he said, with a bit of a smile at her reference. "But I'm not sure you should necessarily wish for the cake to be a lie. After all, it's just as useful for celebration as it is for consolation." He fell silent for a moment, as if considering his words, then looked up with confidence. "I wish you well. It's not a small challenge -- but then, if it were, it wouldn't be worth doing." He followed Juni's eyes to the clock tower, and noting the time, began to help her pack up what little remained of their devoured lunch. "I'd appreciate that, very much. Thank you. I'd suggest labeling it as a science experiment but I'm not sure that would actually stave off the twins from testing it out ... " Somehow, it seemed that Kyouya didn't entirely mind the thought -- as if he knew the Hitachiins would appreciate it too.

"Hah, that is a given," Juni laughed, thinking of all the debugging screens she'd dug through so far. "I can only hope it is not, not something to be seen the day of the festival. But yes, you are right - the things worth doing, they are not the easy things." She capped the hot sauce bottle and tucked it carefully into her backpack. A good thing she'd eaten enough, or the lingering smell of it would have driven her nuts during her afternoon classes. A crooked grin crossed her face. "I shall, shall try to give them a, a puzzle for it..." she shook her head. "I just hope it, oh, does not involve inadvertent rubbing of eyes." As the clock gave off a single chime, Juni looked up at the sky and sighed happily. "Thank you for, for a joyous lunch, Kyouya-san. I enjoyed it very much."

Kyouya chuckled softly. "I'm sure worse things have happened to them ..." He trailed off lightly, carefully not sharing the exact details of that little implication. (It had involved a dare to steal Nekozawa's Beelzenef puppet for 24 hours.) "I enjoyed it as well. Thank you again -- and see you in the club sometime soon, I hope." He collected his bag, and out of his usual habit, offered her an arm as they went to exit the rose maze for class.

Of all the girls who visited the Host Club, she probably needed Kyouya's arm the least of anyone. But she knew he was being polite, and anyway, it was good practice for behaving like someone semi-civilized, so she took his arm and let him escort her. Until they reached the edge of the maze, at which point she slid off his arm, gave him a cheerful wave, and dashed off to class, vaulting a low hedge and several decorative railings on her way up the stairs.
