Ok, as some of you are learning, I have GIR, the dedicated webserver in the closet over there.

One of the projects we were working on before we lost the business internet connection was a Minecraft Server. It runs Minecraft paid for, not that hacked sshit out there so you've got to have a legit minecraft account to get on.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
(scene from the boat ride in the waterpark)

It is a complete b***h to administrate. Keeping all the mods up to date and griefing is a full time job in itself. Plus, GIR only has 4GB of ram which makes it limited to probably no more than six people online at the same time.

Also, it would interfere with any webhosting GIR might do in the future.

I could bring it back up on the temporary while GIR is down as a webserver if enough people showed interest in RAWR having a minecraft server.

To have it be permanent, it would need to make enough money to pay for itself, idk, at least $20 a month. Is there a way to make money with a Minecraft server other than donations? Can a adsense account be bolted to it?

That's ok because really, I'd rather not bring that server back.

Administrating.....
Linux - fine.
Security? not a problem.
Mysql, PHP holes, SSH security, User space, BASH programming. Fine fine fine
Power Backups, Data management, fine fine.
That goddammned Minecraft server: NOooooOOOOoooOOOoOOoooo BADDD!!!!

See, with other things, you research it, you document it, you set it, and you pretty much forget it, it updates every once in awhile, sometimes you choose not to.

With a Minecraft Bukkit server???? ya..... Minecraft updates every few weeks to month, so you've got to update the server, if they aren't exactly the same, ppl can't connect. THen the plugins wont work, so they have to be updated when the author is able to do it, so partially you are running half down. Meanwhile you've got griefers (bad guys) constantly trying to work around the security, sometimes they do and you come to an area flooded, then back to a backup which pisses off someone else..... or you fix and .... god..... Meanwhile the documentation on all levels is horrible or non-existant so you never really know what you are doing, And then the server crashes because one plug in was fighting with another one... but which one? WHY?

So you finally get everything where it needs to be and..... AND>>>>>>>

Minecraft updates and you get to start all over again.

WIth no real prospects of making any cash to keep you going.

So far, that's been my experience of hosting a minecraft server. smile

While I would love to see the minecraft server back up and running after the work we all put into it GIR clearly doesn't have the capability to run it with enough people on it, he'd need either replacing or major upgrades. With the new minecraft setup you could run the server without updating it so often and people would be able to get on it regardless of whether they had updated themselves or not simply by setting up a profile with the correct update on it for GIR, that wouldn't negate the possibility of griefers though in all probability. I don't really have an answer either way, I guess.
