What is your gaia house for? I have things in my inventory for a house, like a bed, window, plant... I don't understand the purpose of these items. I see where you can design a house, but what's the point of it? Is it just a decoration? Is that all your house is?

Your house is mostly for decoration- the items most certainly are- but it does exist within the Gaia Towns. An avi walking around Towns can see your house, and see what you've named it, as well as walk in and see how you've decorated it, assuming they are in your zipcode. It can be a good meeting place, but it's also just another thing for you to 'dress up'
