Psychofish
He's determined to stack up lots of glory, both to vindicate his ancestor's (extremely) unorthodox method of Iaijutsu, and to impress the ladies. Especially the ones who know how to fight.

Quoted for emphasis.

  • Describe an imperial who's in over his/her head.

Otomo Toju just wanted to perfect his skill at bonsai, create tranquility in his little rock garden, and live a life of quiet introspection.
The empire in crisis has a way of intruding on a contemplative man's plans.
None of these bushi seem to listen to a soft-spoken man!
Otomo Toju is supposed to be leading the unit Mirumoto Genjo is part of. He's got the status, but not the skills or the temprament.

  • Describe a samurai one day before retirement.

Hida Makiko never thought she'd live to become and old bushi, but she did. She spent a lifetime on the wall and has the scars to prove it. Now, she's looking forward to hanging up her battered tetsubo, moving in with her youngest son's family, and bouncing her infant granddaughter on her knee.
Makiko crossed paths with Genjo when Genjo was still recovering from his injury. She helped him retrain to fight with just one eye.

  • Describe a samurai who thinks he's/she's in command.

Utaku Umiko is fresh out of her gempukku. Ordinarily, such a novice samurai would not think she'd be in command. Most novice samurai aren't the niece of the Utaku daimyo, though. (Spoiled Disadvantage)

    Mirumoto Genjo

A Dragon, of all people? The Dragon have always had mysterious motivations, unpredictable by all. Why does this Clan, so far removed from the Kaiu Wall, send you and other samurai to help hold it? Isn't the Lion and Unicorn enough?

The short version: The Dragon do what the Dragon do for reasons that are the Dragon's to know and everyone else's to figure out.

    The longer version:
After not being seen for almost 20 years, Togashi Shoin walked down the mountain from the Togashi monastery and demanded a meeting with the Clan Champion. An hour later, the Clan Champion ordered a mobilization of troops to send to the Kaiu Wall. At the head of the expeditionary force - Togashi Shoin and the personal lieutenants of the Mirumoto and Tamori daimyos. Speculation within the expeditionary force is that defense of Crab lands is not the only reason they march to the Kaiu wall. However, if there is a greater reason, it hasn't as yet trickled down to the rank-and-file.
