Do friends and romance go together?

Everyone says that the best relationships are ones that have a friendship at the base. This sounds great and all, but I am starting to doubt the realism of it. So what do you think? Can friends turn into lovers and have a healthy relationship? Is it even possible? And if it is possible, how exactly do you get out of the friendzone?

Late response is late.

But anyway, it's more than possible. I'm reminded of two friends of mine who have known each other for quite some time, and began dating around... maybe a year ago, give a few months. Do they argue? Well, yeah, all couples do eventually. But it's evident that they truly love and have a deep respect for each other. It's not a special case; friendship gives people a chance to really know a person before going further, and many evolved relationships end up like the one I mentioned.
