Since the appearance of the hunters, the students had been put up against life threatening dangers, after life threatening dangers and almost always, they had been returned home beaten, bruised---defeated.
He was tired of it.
Tired of being next to useless. A burden to those around him. He wanted to get stronger, better, so that he could take care of himself and destroy those devils in white. He wanted to end them for what they had done to him, his friends, his home.... And he'd do anything, go through any pain, any hardship to do so. So when he stepped onto the field for the first time, he didn't turn around and walk away, no, he stood there---and gawked like a deer caught in headlights for at least three minutes before he snapped out of it.
Sonuva--
They were supposed to run this course--and survive? Were they ******** insane!?
He knew the power behind lightning. He knew just how deadly it could be. One wrong step and their life could end quicker than one could even blink.
"s**t..."
There was no backing out of this. He chose to face it and now he would he was going to. He didn't want to quit now, not over something as small as this. Those hunters could dish out more than this course could--maybe, so he wanted to face this challenge, and overcome it! He wanted to prove he could! Though... maybe he should have gotten someone to tag along... Just in case if he did get zapped and got knocked out cold or something. Yeah... maybe he would next time... Or maybe not. He didn't want them getting struck by lightning too, if they were only standing by.
"Okay... I can do this... I can...do this--maybe..."
With a gulp, the black dog jumped onto the course and hit the ground running.

Unfortunately... though he managed to evade the first few strikes of lightning, just as he began to move up hill, the lightning struck again. This time, hitting him dead on and knocking the black dog back before he could even yelp. It was quick, but not painless and it was enough to end his run for the time being.
He was dissipating. One hit and he was already dissipating...
Maybe he underestimated the course... Or maybe... he just over estimated himself.
