This is kind of a rant thread I guess..I don't know.
My betta's age seems to be catching up with him. He's around 3 years old and he's gotten..old looking lately. It looks like things are starting to fail, but he's still acting healthy, aside from that.
He still swims up to me every time I come near but lately he's been acting a little bit off. Sometimes he'll sit there and go limp or tilt to the side. I think he's even starting to get cataracts.
He still eats though and is still pretty healthy but I have a feeling one day he's just going to be dead.
I set up this entire ten gallon just for him and he's only been in it for a few months and he's probably going to die from age now, soon.

Nothing makes such a reality easier to brace for, but from what you've described you've given him all you could to make his three years the best he could have.

I've got a Betta fish too and he'll be turning one in December. I moved him to a five gallon tank a few months back. It's nice to see them so content in patrolling the entire thing.

I know how that feels. My first fish Sushi, well I dunno how old he was when I got him he was kind of a rescue, but he spent the better part of a year in a 2.5G tank with no filter or functioning heater. I only bought him a heater when his health finally started to suffer. And an air stone which he enjoyed thoroughly for a few days before he died. All I know for sure is he received the best care of any of the other fish that the students took home. Even though we're in ANIMAL HEALTH and our wildlife teacher gave us a care sheet explaining the betta bowl is bad thing, most students didn't read it or believe me when I told them they need heated water. Sushi's heater may have been crap but at least it kept it fairly warm.

Now I know better, and I have Zuko, who is really awesome, though a tad spoiled, he didn't live in a betta bowl at walmart and then school before I got him, he actually lived in the huge 50G plant display. As a result he's kind of a brat lol.

It sounds like your betta lived a full life. And was pretty lucky.
