With all sorts of talent going on here, I bet it's more than just visual art that we're good at. So here's a thread for any musicians in our numbers to talk about writing and playing music.
A few starter questions to get the conversation going:
--What instrument(s) do you play? Why? --How long have you been playing? --What got you into music? --Do you write music? Have you got any recordings we can listen to? --Got any recitals or exams coming up to practise for? --What's your favourite sort of music to play?
I'm a pianist, and do music as part of my degree at uni. (: I always wanted to play guitar when I was a kid, but they wouldn't give me lessons because my hands were too small... and they never really grew! But I think I gained a lot from learning to play piano first as opposed to any other instrument - I think having all the notes in front of you like that helps you to understand theory a lot better.
Being classically trained obviously influences what I play a lot - although I prefer the later, romantic and modern stuff to baroque and classical-classical. I particularly love turn-of-the-century French stuff - Debussy and Satie and Ravel (although I've never played any Ravel). Chopin's always a favourite, as with any pianist, and I like romantic German stuff as well, like Schumann. I do play some modern stuff too - I'm always learning and arranging my favourite songs (mostly by ear, although Tori Amos has some good stuff on sheet) - and have any of you ever heard the Final Fantasy piano collections? Gorgeous arrangements - I even played one to a bunch of old ladies in a church the other week and they loved it.
I write a little bit, too, but I've got no talent for recording, so I don't have a lot to show you.
I've talked loads - now it's your turn. biggrin

Gonna answer your questions first then go into details.
What instruments do you play? Why?Piano, I've always loved the sound, and it was great bonding time for my grandmother and I. Flute because I heard the sound of a piccolo when I was a kid and fell in love with the high pitches, and learned I couldn't play it unless I played flute first. Saxophone was when I started to reach out to learn more jazz music. Ocarina, ocarina of time, still counts as a flute <3. Voice, that started when I was 12 and practicing for my Bat Mitzvah, my cantor said I had a great voice and suggested I do something with it. How long have you been playing?Piano since I was 5, flute since I was 8, voice since I was 12, alto sax since I was 19. What got you into music? At first, my grandmother. My grandmother was a concert pianist and loved giving piano lessons, and I loved learning from her. Then I loved making sounds, creating them, forming new sounds, and making it all flow together. It continued as I watched movies and as I learned instruments. Do you write music? Have you got any recordings we can listen to?I have on my profile links up to two of my pieces I've done while in graduate school. I haven't uploaded all of my compositions from undergrad, but I do have my junior recital from undergrad on youtube for people to watch/listen to. Got any recitals or exams coming up to practice for?No, I have to come up with my thesis proposal. Favorite sort of music?Video game and film music! That's actually what I want to write for a living, which is why I am pursuing a Masters in Music Technology degree at the moment. I love listening to Romantic music and playing Romantic and French 20th century music <3
Music is my life. Video games and movies are my life. Best way to make my life my living? Put it all together. I've wanted to write music for video games since I was a little girl. For a LONG time I wasn't sure how to pursue that career. Now that I know how to pursue said career desire, I am working my butt off in order to pursue that career.

I was always, always envious of my brother's ability to pick up any instrument at all and teach himself how to play it. Of course, he had piano to begin with, so reading music was nothing.
So I thought, why can't I do that, too?
So I picked up a guitar and in a week and a half, taught myself almost all the open chords. I've been playing for nearly a year now and I must say, I'm proud of myself. Without any real lessons, I've taught myself bar chords, open chords, finger picking, and a few other things.
So I did the same thing with the ukulele. I bought myself a cheap little ukulele and taught myself all the chords I needed for a song I wanted to learn. Now I write "three word songs" When people give me three words and right there I make up a song incorporating those three words in it. I've been playing since Christmas day.
I played drums in my school band in middle school, but I've stopped as of late. Mostly because our set is COVERED IN CRAP. I always talk about missing being a drummer.
Derp-a-derp I play piano, I guess. I'm dreadful at it, but I do play it. As well as the bass, melodica, accordion, and other auxiliary percussion...
I'm actually a terrible musician, but it's JUST SO MUCH FUN.
Congratulations to the people that read music. Notice how I play the instruments that you don't need to read music to play. OTL

╠══Ţö ƄƏ ŏŗ ńŏť ťō ßê I've always wanted to play the piano and the guitar but sadly due to my busy life [trying to get myself into a medical college], it has slipped my mind. I sing from time to time though. I follow pop and electronic music very keenly, like Owl City-pretty music with some life lessons in it. That's the kind of music I want to listen to or maybe sing.
