So, lately on Deviantart someone has been noting me out of the blue, letting me know they added a new artwork. This would be okay if I had requested they do so, or they were an artist who's artwork I really enjoyed. The problem is I have no idea who this person is. I've never visited their page before, I'm very methodical about my watchlist (mostly use it for resources, and references,) and I'm not particularly fond of their work. I was kind of put off the first time it happened, but I just ignored it. Just now this person noted me again, asking me to watch them. I ignored the first message, but if this becomes a regular thing I'm going to start getting really annoyed. Should I note them back and tell them I don't appreciate it? How would I even word that without coming across as one of those high and mighty artists that's too good for others? I don't mean any disrespect, but I honestly have no wish to watch this person.

The best thing imo to do is to tell them upfront how you feel. Say something like "I realize your are trying to get more watches, but I am not interested in watching you. Thank you anyways for telling me about your artwork."yadda yadda.
If they persist, then you could get a little more agressive, but for now approach with caution xD

Well, for one, it's not really within reasonable internet etiquette to pester someone for watches without any indication given that it would be okay to do so.
I think at first, saying what you just did ("I'm very selective with my watchlist, which I use mainly for resources and references") is a polite way of saying you're not going to watch them without being like "I HATE YOUR ART GO AWAY." I guess you could recommend other courses of action, like joining groups and working on improving their art in order to gain more of a following.
If they still persist after that, then I don't see that you're obliged to be polite, seeing as they're not. And you must be able to block them, if they get really annoying?

You could watch them, so they'll shut up, and just choose to not be notified about when they upload something/add a journal/etc.

just note him back that while you're glad he enjoys your artwork, you are under no obligation to return the favor to him. easy as cake.
and you're already annoyed by that? just wait till a fat/pregnancy fetishist or neo nazi faves something of you.

yea I think everyone here is on the same page as me, I think its best to just tell him your not interested in watching him, and if he could please stop spamming you with notes it would be appreciated. 3nodding Best to be honest with stuff like that. Just try to say it nicely to not offend them or anything at the same time

Alrighty. I figured the solicitation was unwarranted, but I wanted a second opinion before I said anything.
