Part 1

You need to connect more with the people,” Maren, the princes’ page, said to John, the prince. John was sitting, bored, on his throne, which sat next to his fathers’ large throne. “Your father is going to, um pass soon and if you’re gonna be ruler then you’ll want the people ta’ like ya” Maren said a bit of his peoples accent slipping into his voice.
“If I go out there I’ll be mauled by them, they hate my father, what makes you think they’ll like me?” John said with a sigh, resting his head on his hand. At the moment John didn’t feel like dealing with politics, but his father was near the edge of his life and John soon had to take the rule, even though he did not want to. “Your different then ya father” Maren stated shortly with a slight mischievous smile. John scowled at his page knowing that he wouldn’t explain why if he asked.
John was 16 years old and had lived as royalty his whole life. He was a bit snobbish and didn’t really like to think of other people’s lives and problems. His father was even worse, being horribly selfish and taxing the kingdoms people harshly for his own profit. John wasn’t really a fan of his fathers ruling over the kingdom but he was too lazy to tell his father off.
John sighed again; Maren could easily convince him to go out if he said no, so instead of wasting his energy on arguing he replied “Fine, I’ll go see the people…tomorrow.” He then got up off of his thrown and started to walk out of the thrown room and down a hall way, Maren hurrying to keep up behind him. “Oh um ya father told me to tell ya that the king Uminer is sendin’ one of daughter’s down here next week to see if ya a good suitor for her.” The page spoke fast getting his words out quickly. John turned around quickly to the sound of the news. “What! How many times do I have to tell ‘the all mighty king’ to not set me up with girls from other kingdoms! I hate when he does this” John picked up his pace and stomped down another hallway leading to a set of stairs. Maren let the prince walk away knowing that every time the subject of girls came up he was very touchy.
John continued to storm up the staircase, he hated when his father butted his nose into his life. At the top of the steps John headed off down a hall way, with pictures all over the walls of all the princes, and princess that had lived before him. John had all ways hated the pictures. All the Princesses were stunningly beautiful; many of them had a gloating pride over them, smiling like there was no better place to be. The Princes too, acted just like the Princesses in the portraits, with their chests held high and a sense of pride on their faces. There was one picture that stood out from all the others: it was the picture of a princess. The frame of the painting was small and in the shape of an oval, unlike all the others which were rectangles of different sizes. The girl in the portrait was nothing like the other princesses with their bright smiles; she had a sullen face, her expression almost emotionless, pain waved through her eyes, which gazed, not straight forwards, but to the side. Her face was outlined with the exquisite orange-brown curls of her hair. Behind the sadness of the girl’s face there was a beauty that none of the other princesses could have matched, it was a delicate and graceful thing that seemed to flow through the brush strokes of the painting. The girl in the painting sat sideways, her head facing the painter but her eyes looking away, she had her hands folded one on top of the other in her lap. Usually John would stop to look at the portrait, but now he ignored it. He walked down the hall without looking at any of the paintings, although it felt like they were all staring and watching him. At the end of the hall there was a large door painted light purple. When John reached the door he opened it revealing his room. It was large and had a balcony that looked out at the kingdom. He walked over to the balcony and looked out across the large city, he watched as people moved in and out of their different places.
After a little while of watching the people below John turned around walking back into his room, “Maybe Maren is right…maybe I do need to connect more with them” he muttered to himself. Inside John felt slightly disconnected from the people of the kingdom, he sensed that they all saw him differently then he saw himself......
