What size does a pic have to be for Background layouts? (A)

Ok, im trying to make a Background for my profile but i cant find out the size it has to be...... and im getting annoyed with so please some one plz help me tell me thanks.

I don't want to tile it i want it to be the full background....
and with header ect the full out design ^_^

Common resolution for screens is 800x600px or 1024x768px anything big will be hard to see for those with smaller resolutions. People fail to keep that in mind when designing layouts.

So if you are making a layout or want to have one non tiling image for a background, use the common resolutions, Anything big is overkill and again, some people will have problems viewing your profile.
