In the city scape of Chicago, where the lights are too bright for the stars to show, a bunch of teenagers are discovering that they have peculiar talents; the ability to bend fire, create illusions, tell the future, walk through walls. These are only a few.
But there is someone out to get them. An organization called the Chord is searching out these teens and making them disappear one by one.
Several of those still left free form a resistance to the unpredictable threat of the Chord and whatever it does. One by one the renegades come, and the battle only just begins...

"My name is Jay. I can catch anything."

Ever since that day I caught a bullet, my life has been different. I think I'm in love with my best friend, and he swears he loves me, would do anything it takes to save me, but what are the odds of getting caught in a third mob shooting in the rest of my life? Well. It is Chicago, I guess. You never know.

Jay leaned on the rail of the bridge and stared into the thick fog, thinking too hard about too many things. She wondered if the Guy in White would ever get out of the psych ward they stuck him in, and if the Australian had managed to get out of the country in time to avoid the Feds. Probably.
She looked at the faint trace work of scars where the bullets had burned her skin, and wondered again if she'd done it. She felt in her pocket for the bullet itself, a reminder that it hadn't been a nightmare or some crazy dream. Perhaps it was. But her hand slid over the cool metal and she sighed.
A car door slammed nearby, and she made herself scarce. Paranoia was something she had come to accept. It had paid off before.

:: Leon sat in the library digging through piles and piles of nonfiction books about the desert and the hidden gems inside it. Leon had to figure out a way to get to the desert. Being in Chicago wasn't an easy life. All Leon knew was his parents had killed themselves in the search for the treasure. Now he was an orphan and had no home only the clothes on his back, so how in the world could he afford a train to the desert?::

A shape loomed out of the shadows and Jay tensed to run, but it turned out to be Davy, her best friend.
"Easy Jay," he said.
"Easy yourself," she replied, crossing her arms. "You gotta quit doing that."

Davy has always been good at showing up out of when you least expect it. He's tall and quiet, and the best friend I've ever had. He's a good basketball player and a great friend.

"Doing what? I thought you'd be hungry." He held out a crumpled paper bag with a restaurant logo and she took it, digging out a breakfast burrito and hash browns.
"How 'bout you?" she asked. "D'you want some?"
Davy shook his head. "Nope."

:: Leon researched and researched and finally found a book on gems. He went and checked it out and a book on how to survive in the desert. The only thing left was to find a way there. Suddenly a girl came through the library's doors just as he was going out. She dropped her six books all over the ground. Leon bent down and helped her pick them up. He noticed she was wearing glasses and had her hair braided. He imagined quickly how beautiful she was behind those glasses.

"I'm sorry." spoke Leon helping her up.
"Don't be. I wasn't looking where I was going." spoke the girl noticing that this boy was at least two years older than her.
"Here." smiled Leon taking the books and handing them to the librarian.
"What's your name?" asked the girl her curiosity getting the better of her.
"Leon you?" asked Leon.
"Diana." she spoke softly knowing how much her real name caused her so much pain. No one knew of the name Shadow for a girl.

Jay and Davy walked through the drizzle in companionable silence, broken only by their footsteps.
"I heard about them again," Davy said at last.
"Who?" Jay asked, her eyes sliding across the street to watch the black-suited man walking opposite.
"Those kids. The ones who can do things."
"The ones like me."
Davy snorted and shook his head. "No one is like you."
Jay smiled a little, her eyes shifting from misty gray to blue. "Hm."
Davy caught her arm and pulled her into a bear hug that made her gasp and crushed the breath from her lungs. He released her almost immediately and she tried not to laugh as her feet met the concrete once more.
"No one will ever be like you."

::Leon wanted to invite her to his house but his house was nothing more than a hut that he had made out of wood and straw. There wasn't very much space in it and he lived in the middle of nowhere.::

"Thank you for helping me." smiled Shadow.

"Ah, it's not a problem. I'm a gentlemen you know." smiled Leon. Leon thought about the book in his hand and wondered could this girl help him?

"Do you know anything about the gems of the desert?" I asked.

"Oh. Yes I do." spoke Shadow softly leading him to the nonfiction section where no one ever went.

"They say anyone who goes after the gems dies trying." spoke Shadow.

"Yes and the gems can change a person's life." spoke Leon.

"Why? Tell me you aren't going after them?" asked Shadow.

"Yes, I'm going after them. My parents died trying to get them so I could have a life. I'm an orphan and a street rat. I need help Diana." spoke Leon.

"I don't know if I can help you." spoke Shadow.

"You don't have to risk your life. Just tell me everything you know." spoke Leon.

"Come to my house and we can talk more about this." spoke Shadow.

"All right." smiled Leon following her out the door. Shadow thought if she got too close to Leon than her real sercet would be revealed. She wasn't an ordinary girl, no the name Shadow was given to her for a Reason. One she still didn't understand.
