I just randomly remembered.. B| Before I'd come up with Southern Shuffle I was going to write a story (well, a comic actually) about an idea I had freshman year |: About a.. well a college student who had the ability to talk to animals.. and her dog.. who fell into a puddle of radioactive material and turned blue.. who come across this failed experiment who is half human half cat.. and.. basically the catgirl and the dog hate each other.. I dunno.. xD I come up with the most... *shakes head* And yeah, it sounds cliche.. hell all of my plots do.. but I always have extremely weird twists in everything *shakes head* Anyway.. I was gonna upload it to dA but I was just soooo incredibly insecure about it so I just stopped writing v_v I thought I'd share it with the guild though
EDIT: what I had anyway.. I stopped after three chapters cause the whole thing just felt like a failure ._.

			            Prelude-
Golden brown eyes fluttered open as the soft, rhythmic pattern of rain started to fall, causing the girl, who looked as though she’d been unconscious for a while, to wake up. She sat up and was about to take in her surrounding, but a sudden blinding pain caused her to abruptly place a hand to her head, shielding her eyes. God, what a killer headache she had. She could barely see because of it. Waiting for the pain to subside, she tried to arrange her thoughts, but everything was a jumbled up mess and that wasn’t helping her headache very much. After taking a few slow, deep breaths, she lowered her hand and squinted into the rain, which was coming down harder now, her eyes only taking in darkness as they attempted to re-adjust. She continued to stare blankly and nothing until she looked down and saw that she was apparently sitting afloat on a large piece of metal from what had to have been a large ship. She was also surrounded by water. Lots of water.
  “Where am I?”
A long, slim tail involuntarily curled over one of her legs, and a blinding pain shot up her spin. What was that? When did that get there? She didn’t remember being a cat. She looked down at her hands and they were most definitely human. A frown formed on her face and she glanced at the tail. It was strange. She didn’t remember much at all, and was a bit unsure of herself. Had she always been like this? She numbly lifted up her hand and felt the pointy cat-like ears where normal human ones should have been, and shuddered. With her teeth clenched in pain, she struggled against the most acute pain, the pain in her head, and tried to remember.
  “What am I?”
She glanced down at the metal piece that was keeping her afloat. She hadn’t remembered being on a ship. The last thing she remembered was… well… she didn’t remember much at all. She still tried hopelessly to think, but it only caused her head to throb sharply in pain. She groaned and rubbed her head in annoyance, turning her long and wet brown strands of hair into a tangled mess. It did nothing to help, really. She pulled her hand away and just let out a frustrated sigh, failing to notice the dripping red substance that was now sticking to her hand. Curling her knees up, she wrapped her arms around them and rested her chin on her knees, biting her lip and continuing her fight against the pain in her head to try and remember. “Mon dieu…” she said out loud, her voice merely a soft whisper compared to the sound of the rain. The pain in her heard reached an unbearable pitch, and dark edges started to blur at her vision. Had she been aware of the large injury at the back of her head that was bleeding freely she might have tried harder not to let herself succumb to the feeling of unconsciousness that was overpowering her now. However, she allowed her eyes to slip closed and was once more overcome in a hazy darkness, the swirl of questions in her head slowly ebbing away before only one, the most prominent, remained:
  “Who am I?”

			            Chapter 1-
Who knew that waiting for your best friend to get home could be so… time consuming. Sunny laid his head on his paws, watching the door with an intent look on his face, as if everything else had no meaning. The time was getting closer and closer to 9 o’clock and his impatience was growing until he pricked his ears and looked up abruptly, the sound of a key turning in the keyhole and then twisting causing him to stand up, the wag of his tail giving away his happiness. In walked Bree Skye Anderson, brown hair a mess, light blue eyes looking dull and tired. She was carrying a heavy schoolbag and a bag full of clothes, which she promptly dropped to the floor before noticing the Labrador as he approached, a smile taking over her features.
Now, unlike with other dogs, there was no excited bound forward, jumping up on his owner, and wagging his tail like he hadn’t seen her for days. Sunny wasn’t that kind of dog. In fact, he was quite unique in comparison. One could tell from the toned down blue fur to the human-like mannerisms of his, that this was no ordinary dog. He took a seat at his owner’s feet, though the term ‘owner’ was used loosely, and looked up into her eyes. “Running late again, are we?” he asked, the sarcastic tone evident in his voice. “Hush. They made me lock up again,” came a soft reply from Bree, looking unfazed at the fact that a dog just talked to her. Hell, she had to put up with him for three years, and before that even, with other pets. See, she had that very uncommon gift of being able to understand animals, crazy as that seemed. Other then that, she was just an ordinary girl. An ordinary girl that was about to take her blue not-so-pet for a walk, yes.
“You’re a mess. Let’s go.” Their night walks were always the highlight of Sunny’s day, since he couldn’t really be active much during the day, not with Bree at school or work or running errands. His blue hued coat caused too much attention, good and bad, and it was a lot easier to blend in with the night. He walked over to the door and took a few steps outside, before turning to look at her. She hadn’t moved. “Well come on!” “Can’t I change first? I’ve only been wearing this for the past four hours…” Sunny cast a longing look out at the world. It called to him. A pathetic look took over his face, but when he turned back to Bree he looked normal. “Fine. Go throw on some jeans or something. I’m going to go roll in the grass.” He wasn’t joking. She gave him a thankful smile and scurried off to go and change, and he watched her disappear into the hallway before he turned and, with a random burst of speed, darted into their yard and dived into the grass. Oh, that felt extremely nice.
He rolled in it for a good while, allowing the scent of grass to attach itself to his body, a delighted expression on his face and his tail wagging. He abruptly paused, though, when a random spectator paused to watch him, looking amused. “What are you looking at?!” he barked. He was entitled to have the rare dog moment. He watched as the guy shook his head, grinned, and continued on his way. He so wished people, other than Bree, could understand him sometimes. He’d have either scared the guy out of his wits at hearing a dog speak in fluent English, or have gotten the apology he deserved. He rolled over onto his belly and sat up. If he didn’t love his life on four legs, he’d have probably given the whole ‘human’ thing a try. Not that he would even know where to start with that. He was no sorcerer, magician, or anything of the sort. He was a just a dog. A very fortunate yet misunderstood dog.
He was lucky, though, that he and Bree had met. Possibly it was fate. She understood him, and he enjoyed having someone to communicate with, since much of the negative attention he got was from his fellow kind. Like it was his decision to go to a toxic waste dump and jump into a very iffy puddle of spilled goo. No. He was just a pup when his owners… well… they didn’t like him so much. They’d dropped him off at the dump, having no idea it was a toxic waste site, and drove off. Of course Sunny, being the curious little pup he was, had saw something bright and went to investigate. He hadn’t meant to touch the liquid, he just wanted to sniff at it a bit. However, he’d tripped over his own large paws, the poor thing, and fell into the puddle of bright green bubbling goo. And thus the once yellow Labrador had gained a blue coat, a few burns, and more than likely some brain damage. It was just lucky that Bree, who had been hanging around the site to try and promote the saving of the environment or something, had heard his loud cries and went to his rescue. Had she not washed that stuff out of his fur in time and gotten him to a veterinarian, he would probably be dead.
  “Ready to go?”
His thoughts had been interrupted by Bree’s voice, and he abruptly looked up to see that she’d changed into jeans a t-shirt and was standing over him. “Yeah, let’s go. I want to go to the park.” “I don’t have class tomorrow,” Bree started. “Maybe we can go the long way? I mean, if you’re up for it.” Sunny abruptly jumped up, looking delighted, his tail involuntarily wagging once more. He was up for it, obviously. He bounded forwards down the street, and Bree followed him at her own pace. She knew he wouldn’t run off. Sunny was much too human in mind to even do something like that. She suspected that the toxic waste had somehow messed with the part of the brain where all his canine instinctive nature resided, and so when she raised him, he ended up growing more of a human-like outlook on life. The two were best friends, and he was the one she told all of her problems to.
Sunny slowed down after a bit, allowing Bree the time to caught up. When she did, he looked around to make sure no one was around, for it’d look pretty odd for her to be walking down the street talking to a dog and a dog barking back at him, and he didn’t want people to view Bree as weird or a freak or anything. He saw that the coast was clear, and looked up at her. “So how was everything today?” “Eh… same ole, same ole. Classes were long… but informative and work just dragged on. I wish my boss would lighten up on me a bit, seeing as I’m the only one in there who’s in college right now.” Bree sighed and looked up at the sky. “I still feel like if I make one mistake she’s going to use that to fire me or something.” Sunny wrinkled his nose. Bree’s boss was… a difficult woman to like, from what he’d heard of her. She was a cranky old woman who wasn’t too fond of the younger generation, and since Bree was the youngest working woman at the café and was still in college she kind of had it in for her. She liked to give her a lot of extra work to do and made her stay over sometimes. Of course, Bree was way too nice to ever tell her off. Sunny would love to give her a piece of his mind, however.
“What about yourself?” Bree asked, obviously not wanting to be on the topic of her job for too long. Sunny thought for a moment. “Nothing special. Tried to teach Toby how to climb up on the cabinets and get me food. Didn’t really work though.” Bree shook her head. “He’s still a kitten, cut him some slack. He’ll be your little ‘minion’ in no time.” “Exceeeellent,” Sunny said, wagging his tail mischievously. Bree rolled her eyes good-naturedly, and the two continued down the street, each thinking about what they could discuss next. Sunny looked up towards the sky in contemplation. “Things are pretty much the same day-to-day with us, aren’t they? You go to class and work. I stay at home and entertain myself with Toby or sleep. I wish something would just... happen. Something exciting. We could use some change.” He glanced over at Bree and grinned a cocky dog-like grin. “You should get me a lady friend.” She lifted an eyebrow at him, a slight smile tugging at the edges of her mouth. She reached down, ruffling up the fur on top of his head and causing his grin to turn into a grimace. “Nice try, bud. But I think we’re all good for now. Something will happen when it happens.” She stood back up and stretched, letting a small yawn escape her. “Now let’s get to the park before those lovely New York City creeps come out.”

			            Chapter 2-
The time spent at the park had been nice. Bree and Sunny sat in the grass the whole time, people-watching and sharing random tidbits of information when struck with a random thought. A few dogs had walked by, showing some faint interest in the pair, but growing discouraged upon seeing that Sunny was not like they were, and pulling their owners elsewhere to go sniff at other, more normal dogs. Sunny looked unfazed by their actions, however, he was as disinterested in them as they were in him. Humans were just a lot more easier to understand… in his head. At fifteen minutes to eleven, Bree had stood up and stretched. “Alright, let’s get out of here. Toby probably misses us.”
The two were now making their way down the street again, both silent and in their own worlds when Sunny pricked his ears up. “Do you hear that?” he asked without thought. He knew Bree’s ears weren’t as sharp as his in detecting sounds, but he asked anyway to be sure. The girl looked to him, confused, and lifted an eyebrow. “Hear… what?” Sunny continued to listen, before darting forward and taking off down the alley they were about to pass. “Sunny! What are you doing!” She ran forwards a bit, but stopped at the alley’s entrance, not wanting to go down there at this time of night. “Sunny!” She called into the darkness after him, her voice hanging in the air in a disturbing manner. Sunny paused and glanced back at her silhouette, not wanting to cause her any worry. “I’ll be fine. Just wait there. It sounds like someone is crying.” He turned and trotted forward cautiously. The crying had obviously stopped, but he didn’t hear anyone try and run away. Not that they could anyway, since they were at a dead end. “Hello?” he called out, wondering if they’d respond to a friendly dog bark. However, it shocked him when a female’s voice actually replied back, in an accent he wasn’t familiar with.
  “Get away from me!”
He jumped away from the voice, which was a lot closer then he’d expected, and glanced towards Bree, who was looking into the dark alley with a confused look on her face. “What’s going on?” she asked as she took a step forward. “Sunny, are you okay? Who’s down there?” There was a hiss, followed by a scuffle as the… whatever she was scooted further away from then, the tone in her voice obviously frightened. “I said get away! I do not have anything for you! Do not touch me!” Sunny tilted his head to the side. Though the female’s voice was obviously human.. he sensed that she was not. But was she? He tilted his head to the side in confusion. “Let’s just go,” he said to Bree, trotting forwards and heading out the alley. He was too tired for mysteries. But Bree was headed in the direction opposite him, and strolled past him and towards the voice. He turned and watched, hoping the girl wasn’t going to get into any trouble. She knew he wasn’t much of a guard dog if she did.
“Your accent is… not American. Are you from somewhere in Europe? It sounds French.” Bree spoke to the whatever it was, trying to sound calm and not nervous. “Are you new here? If so, hanging around in alleys is probably not the best idea.” There was a long silence, and what sounded like something sliding up the wall as the female got to her feet. So she was human then. Sunny didn’t know why he was confused at first. There was just something about her… “I am… from France.. oui. I think. I am not sure anymore. I don’t… remember much. And I do not know how I got here and I do not recall how I got to this.. country. My name is Ameri. I have been staying in this… alley did you call it? To avoid attention. I seem to get a lot of that here for some reason.” Her voice was low and rushed, and she seemed to be trying to explain herself in as few words as possible. From France though, eh? Maybe that’s why Sunny had a hard time trying to figure out who or what she was. “Oh.. I see. Nice to meet you, Ameri. So you don’t have a place to stay, do you? Perhaps you could stay with us for the night? Maybe we can call someone and figure things out,” he heard Bree reply. He shook his head. Oh that Bree, always trying to lend a helping hand to people.
Sunny listened as the girl, Ameri, seemed to mull Bree’s words over in her head. “I guess… one night would not be so bad. You are the first person to talk to me… civilly since I have been here.” His ears pricked as he heard the two making their way down the dark alley before stepping back into the streetlights’ beams. His head tilted to the side even more, and his facial features became as shocked as a dog could manage to get.
Ameri was… well she was human, yes. He could tell from the way she looked. The long brown hair, facial features, and body type were all very much human. But there was something different about her, and he now knew why he’d been confused earlier. A set of pointy cream coloured, brown tipped cat ears replaced what should have been normal human ears, and the long cream coloured, though once again brown tipped, tail that stuck out behind her was definitely not human. There was also something about her eyes… they were a bit too gold… too.. mesmerizing to be human. What was she?! He’d heard of cat people before but… this was just unreal. Then again, people looked at him and thought the same thing so… guess he knew how it was like from their perspective now. He glanced over at Bree, and she looked a bit shocked as well. Bree was much more accepting, however, and her expression turned friendly fast. “Well I can see why you’d get unwanted attention here,” she said with a thoughtful nod.
“I was not… born.. like this. I do not even remember how this happened.” Ameri let out a sigh and tugged at the dirty, overlarge shirt she was wearing. Bree frowned. “Huh.. well.. let’s get you to my place. Maybe we can figure this all out. I’m Bree, by the way. And that’s Sunny.” Sunny was about to exchange a friendly greeting with the girl, and was getting ready to get pet and talked to in that annoying baby lovey-dovey voice, but her reaction was quite the opposite. She hissed and stepped back, those cat ears of her flattening back and her hair starting to stand on end. Sunny backed away as well, looking confused. “What did I do?!” he said in indignation. “You… dog! Chien! Augh!” she responded in a sharp tone. “Do not come near me, fleabag.” He looked very offended, and wanted to comment on it, but the fact that she had apparently understood him caught him more off guard. “You… can understand me?” he asked, glancing in confusion at Bree, who… looked just as confused, and also like she was going to try and stop him from going off on the girl. “Of course I understand you. What a stupid question. This is your dog? Eck. I do not like dogs very much.” She wrinkled her nose and turned away, crossing her arms in frustration. “That… is very obvious,” Sunny said, glancing up at Bree before tugging on her jeans. “A moment, please?”
He walked a little ways away from the scorned French woman, followed by Bree, and turned to look at her with an upset look. Before he could speak, however, Bree lifted a hand to silence him. “Don’t start. Not everyone in this world likes dogs. And it’s only for one night.” Sunny sat down and pouted, trying and failing not to look pathetic. “I don’t think I can last.” Bree gently rested her head on top of his head. “Don’t be like that, bud. You know I can’t help but to always be helpful towards others. She won’t impose too much. And I’ll make sure she keeps out of your way.” She gently scratched behind his ears, knowing full well he couldn’t resist a good ear scratch. “Ugh… fine,” he said. “But don’t expect me to give up my couch.”
He jumped up again, standing and waiting there as Bree walked over to Ameri. After some convincing that the two wouldn’t have to be around one another, Ameri was ready to go. “Lead the way, dog,” she said, her voice full of contempt. Sunny started to growl, but saw Bree shaking her head out the corner of his eye, obviously telling him to just let it go. He wrinkled his nose up again, lifted his muzzle towards the sky, and started marching home in a dignified manner.
After all, this was only for one night, right?

			            Chapter 3-
Sunny sat at the door after a very frustrating walk home. He’d went ahead of Bree and Ameri after they were halfway to the house because he just couldn’t take it anymore. The French girl obviously didn’t like him at all and he wasn’t quite so fond of her attitude towards him. All and all, she wasn’t a person he wanted in the same house with him. However, Bree was just too nice for her own good and now he was stuck with that girl. He wrinkled his nose. It was only for one night, though. Then he wouldn’t have to deal with her. That one thought was what was keeping him from banging his head into the door repeatedly. Figuratively speaking, of course.
The sound of the two girls voices caused him to look up, ears pricked, and he couldn’t help but to wrinkle his nose. It sounded like the two were getting along, and that was something he didn’t want at all. However, Bree also talked to the homeless people that lived around. He really had nothing to worry about. He looked away as Bree stepped up the three steps and opened the door, and he quietly slipped inside before she was within five feet of him. Instead, he headed for the living room with ‘his’ couch and hopped up on it. He laid down smack dab in the middle and nudged a little ball of orange fluff that was near the end of the couch. The orange fluff twitched, and unfolding, revealing a small little orange tabby kitten, probably no older than three or four months. It opened his hazel coloured eyes and looked up at the big Lab in a confused way, wondering why he was being woken up.
“Heya Toby, did you miss us?” Sunny asked softly, nudging the kitten in an affectionate manner. Toby mewed and rolled over, a small purr starting up inside him. Sunny wagged his tai and laid his head on his paws and near the kitten as he started to fall back asleep. At least there was someone on his side in this. He glanced to the side blankly as the two girls walked into the living room, hoping they wouldn’t linger, but Ameri had gotten distracted by Toby, who had abruptly sat up and pricked up his ears in alert. “Mon dieu!! That is an adorable little kitten!” Ameri gasped, darting forward and picking up the kitten in her arms, cradling him as if he were a child. Sunny stood up on the couch abruptly and couldn’t help but start growling. “Excuse me!” he said in a rude tone. She disregarded him, however, and snuggled Toby closely. He was looking confused at first, but then a loud purr of contentment could be heard by them all, and he flicked his tail back and forth happily. “Aww, he really likes you!” Bree said with a grin, reaching over to scratch the kitten behind the ears.
Sunny wrinkled his nose. Looked like Toby was a lost case, by the sound of his purring. “Ugh, take all of that somewhere else, please. I’d like to just have some peace if you lovely ladies don’t mind.” Bree rolled her eyes a tiny bit. “Sunny…” she started. “She’s our guest. Just suck it up and deal with it. It’s only for one night and you guys aren’t entitled to get along.” “But she--!” “Let it go.” Sunny growled. Again, Bree was too nice for her own good. She wouldn’t reprimand Ameri since she didn’t know her all that well, and in the end he got all the scolding. If he were more like a pet she probably would have stuck up for him, but as it was… she didn’t. So not cool. He jumped off the couch and headed for the kitchen to sniff around for some comfort food, but turned around to make sure that girl was not about to sit on his couch. He saw her still standing and, with a growl, trudged into the kitchen.
He had to endure the sounds of their voices as he walked over towards the fridge, tugged on a makeshift rope that was there specifically for him, and opened it up. He ignored Bree’s side and reached inside and pulled out a peanut butter flavoured bone, before using his rear to close the refrigerator door. At least he could keep himself preoccupied whilst the two were busy being all buddy buddy. He walked into the room and the bone dropped out of his mouth in shock. “GET HER OFF MY COUCH! YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE SHE’S BEEN!” The two girls looked up from the couch in shock, and Toby, who’d fallen asleep again, woke up with a start and starting hissing in fear. Bree looked at him with a frown. “Sunny. We’ve just had this conversation, settle down,” she said, not wanting any sort of conflict. “I TOLD YOU I DIDN’T WANT HER ON MY COUCH! YOU SAID!” Sunny growled in indignation. “You said she’d be out of my way!” It was obvious that he was furious. Ameri didn’t like him. He didn’t like her. The two obviously clashed. And he didn’t care if it was for ‘just one night’, she was disrespectful and rude and he wasn’t having it.
Ameri smirked from the couch, her legs crossed and her position relaxed. She gently set Toby down after reassuring
